The Cecil Hotel has been called many things: The Suicide, a skid row flophouse, the inspiration for American Horror Story, and the site of Elisa Lam’s infamous elevator video. In this episode, we trace how an ordinary Beaux-Arts hotel became a “murder hotel” in the public imagination, from suicides and serial killers to viral footage, Netflix docuseries, and internet urban legends.

This isn’t a story about a haunted hotel… it’s a story about how a hotel becomes haunted, and why the real horror is what happens to the living inside its walls.
