The Matsuis are a Sacramento political dynasty. Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui has been in office since 2005, preceded by her husband, the late Congressman Bob Matsui, who held the seat for 26 years prior. This upcoming election, Rep. Matsui is facing a challenger within her own party - Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang. Maya C. Miller is a politics reporter with CalMatters and shares her reporting on a larger trend happening in California - younger Democrats challenging veteran House members in safe blue seats.

How far would you go to find a tree? For a team of forest ecologists from UC Davis, that distance was 240 miles up 24 mountain peaks in the Sierra Nevada. And it was all to map Jeffrey pines, which had been spotted at might higher elevations than previously recorded. Hugh Safford is a fire and vegetation ecologist at UC Davis and he joins us today to explain what this extreme tree hunt can tell us about climate change.
