After the British conquest of 1760, the English began to settle in Québec. Many former naval and army officers bought land. Many of the seigneuries in the Trois-Rivières/Bécancour/Nicolet area now had British owners, with names like Hart, Munro, Chandler, Cuthbert, and Gugy.
