Nathaniel Hawthorne has a lovely version of the story of King Midas, called "The Golden Touch," and Joseph read it aloud to his kids recently. While it's ostensibly about greed, it's also about exchanging real life for sterile, un-smellable, un-tasteable, un-nourishing shiny facsimiles.
