Summary: Right, so today was a bit of a mixed bag in AI land. The big story is California actually passing SB 243, which means AI companion chatbots now have proper guardrails — think age verification, suicide prevention protocols, and real transparency requirements. This comes after some genuinely tragic cases involving kids and chatbots like Character AI, plus that leaked Meta document showing they were allowing romantic chats with 13-year-olds, which was absolutely grim. OpenAI fought this hard, even served someone a subpoena over it, but Newsom signed it anyway. It goes live in January, and whilst some will cry overregulation, asking for basic transparency when you've got 800 million users seems fairly reasonable to me.

Meanwhile, Meta's on an absolute spending spree, poaching Andrew Tuk from Mira Murati's new startup Thinking Machines after he'd been there less than nine months. We're talking potential compensation packages of $1.5 billion for one researcher, which really puts into perspective how much money is sloshing around in this space — especially when you compare it to the EU's entire AI initiative budget of €1.1 billion. Also covered some interesting research showing AI actually widens the gap between top performers and average workers, which tracks with what I've been saying for ages: AI makes productive people more productive and lazy people more lazy. It's all about attitude and willingness to experiment with these tools, really.
