Paul argues that prophecy builds up the church because it offers clear, Spirit-led instruction, encouragement, and comfort, whereas uninterpreted tongues do not edify others due to their unintelligibility. The Corinthians, influenced by a culture obsessed with status, had misused spiritual gifts for self-promotion. Paul redirects them to value edification and understanding above showmanship. Rev. Wontrop underscores that understanding is crucial for genuine spiritual growth and challenges modern churches to evaluate their worship practices through this lens. Prophecy—defined as declaring God's will by the Spirit—is presented as a gift meant to serve others, not elevate self. Ultimately, true worship should bring clarity, conviction, and comfort to both believers and the unconverted.
