On May 6, 2017, Robert Paylor was competing in the collegiate rugby national championship — a moment he thought would mark one of the best days of his life. Just minutes into the game, an opposing player performed an illegal move that left Robert motionless on the field, unable to move or feel anything below his neck. His doctor delivered a grim prognosis: Robert was told he would never walk nor move his hands again. His life as he knew it had been shattered, and his challenges were only just beginning. His rehabilitation journey began with battling spinal fusion surgery, pneumonia, and an inability to swallow, losing 60 pounds in only one month. He had to re-learn almost every basic human function — from feeding himself, to getting dressed, and brushing his teeth.
