Vyasdev had to be instructed on how to write or recite Srimad Bhagavatam for the good of mankind. Once he completes the separation of the Vedas and writes the Mahabharata, he gets very distracted and upset since he cannot find happiness in doing the above. Then Narada appears to console him, telling him that he has to now think of devotion to Shri Krishna and write his stories.
