In a broadcast of a Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs baseball game, the announcers for Marquee Sports Network, Boog Sciambi and Jim Deshaies, mentioned that if Cubs turned a 6-4-3 double play, they would buy mozzarella sticks for everyone at the Corner Taproom in Cascade, Iowa.Zach Nothdorf, the owner of the Corner Taproom, stated that the announcers had previously mentioned the bar and that this latest mention was "surreal". When the double play happened two pitches later, patrons at the Corner Taproom "erupted" in celebration.Nothdorf said he felt he had to do something to support Rea, who is from Cascade and is "such a humble guy". Nothdorf had previously created a promotion where every two strikeouts by Rea earned patrons a free beer, and the mozzarella stick mention caused the bar to trend on Twitter for a while.Since the Corner Taproom does not have a kitchen and does not serve food, Nothdorf partnered with a nearby pizza place, Happy Joe's, to create a similar offering. They made "cheese sticks," which are similar to garlic cheese fingers, common in Nova Scotia. The cheese sticks were given to everyone in the bar for free, and patrons cheered in response. Marquee Sports Network requested a picture, and the bar was featured on the broadcast again.
Nothdorf noted that he has a personal relationship with Colin Rea, who is about three years younger than him, and they have known each other and their families for a long time. Their kids even play on the same soccer team. Nothdorf, a strong supporter of local businesses, serves local beers at the Corner Taproom and plans to send a care package to Boog Sciambi and Jim Deshaies. He described Cascade as a town with a strong sense of community where residents support each other and their local businesses.
