On the morning of February 15, 1974, the last day of Mary Schlais's life, she said goodbye to her college roommate, put on the heavy green jacket her brother had given her the Christmas before, hung a sign around her neck with the words MADISON in big bold lettering, and left for a big art show in Chicago.
