Triggers: When Life Pushes Your Buttons
Manage episode 488398249 series 2989384
Have you ever felt completely derailed by an unexpected emotional reaction that seemed totally out of proportion to the situation? That moment when your heart races, your body tenses, and your mind spirals into old patterns of thinking—this is what we call being "triggered."
In this deeply vulnerable episode, I share a raw, unfiltered experience of being triggered in real-time. What began as a fantastic morning filled with positive energy suddenly crashed when I received an email denying my proposal to teach Tai Chi Gong classes at a local sheriff's department. The rejection activated my core fear—loss of control—sending me into an emotional tailspin that I processed right here on the microphone.
Through this experience, we explore how triggers connect to childhood wounds and unresolved traumas. For me, growing up with a father whose authoritarian "because I said so" parenting style left me feeling powerless as a child created a desperate need to control everything as an adult. When that control was threatened, even in small ways, it would activate intense emotional responses that affected my relationships, parenting, and sense of self.
The spiritual journey involves recognizing that these triggers are opportunities for growth and healing. Our triggers point to exactly what needs transformation within us. When we can observe them without judgment and trace them back to their origins, we begin the process of liberation from these old patterns and reactions.
Whether you identify with control issues or have entirely different triggers, this episode offers a compassionate look at how we can navigate these challenging emotional responses. By bringing awareness to our triggers and embracing vulnerability, we take significant steps toward becoming free to just be our authentic selves—not defined by our traumas or our defenses, but by the love and light that we truly are.
