When you think of Hebrews you should think of two words: Christ, and better. Hebrews is supreme in the New Testament in its treatment of Christ’s person and work. Specifically, how He has fulfilled all that the Old Testament law predicted. For this reason, He is better. And He brings the better covenant and better promises through His better mediation and better atoning sacrifice.

The author has this gospel in view when he begins in chapter two to urge his readers to heed the gospel. Though he is preparing to explain the gospel to them in full detail, he reminds them to remember what they have already heard. They have the gospel, sufficient to believe and be saved, but not all have acted. Not all have trusted in Christ for salvation. It is this failure that he addresses in the opening verses of chapter two.
