I, Natasha Venter think it’s important that this conversation with Kathryn Annis not only acknowledge the flood and the mental health impact, but also challenge the dangerous divisionist narratives that have been circulating. Rather than furthering outrage or blame, I’d love to bring a trauma-informed lens to how communities can begin to heal.

Possible Talking Points today my include in this hour show will be....

• The flood as both a physical and symbolic rupture: it’s exposing the deeper psychological and social fractures we’ve long ignored. • Rising hate and division are not just political—they’re trauma responses. Unprocessed grief becomes rage. Disconnection breeds cruelty.

• Dehumanizing rhetoric (especially targeting children and vulnerable families) is a symptom of collective nervous system dysregulation and systemic propaganda. It must be addressed directly.

• The idea that “they deserved it” is not only morally bankrupt; it’s psychologically harmful, and perpetuates cycles of violence and shame.

• Dawning Institute's focus: helping people see the human beneath the headline, reconnecting with compassion, and challenging the narratives that divide us.

• Practical ways to support: trauma-informed listening, community dialogue, mutual aid networks, and interrupting digital echo chambers. Families in Texas are grieving. Innocent children swept away and are still missing from the unimaginable torrential rain. Homes have been lost. Entire communities are navigating the aftermath of historic flooding. A true, unmitigated tragedy that no one could have truly imagined.

At The Dawning Institute, we believe healing doesn’t begin with opinions; it begins with presence.

Kathryn wrote "In times like these, it’s not about where someone lives or how they voted. It’s about remembering that every child, every family, every neighbor deserves care and dignity. We must reject the impulse to divide and instead come together in grounded compassion.

That’s why I’ve created a community relief document to help guide your support in ways that are real and immediate: > Local nonprofits accepting donations > Verified drop-off points for essential supplies > Small businesses contributing proceeds to relief efforts > Direct support links for families affected by the floods
