Manage episode 513673300 series 3563202
In this episode, we sit down with Frank Portinari, whose life story is far from the typical motivational speaker narrative. Instead of tales of daring adventure or overcoming physical obstacles, Frank shares his journey from a tumultuous upbringing in Camden, London, through a life marked by gang culture, criminal involvement, and extremism.
Frank candidly discusses his dual life as a school keeper and a senior member of the Ulster Defence Association during the Troubles in the 1990s, a period of his life that led to his arrest and time in prison for arms-related crimes. He explores the complexities of his behaviours, the allure and consequences of gang loyalty, his experiences with violence, and the catalytic events that led to self-reflection and change.
The conversation also touches on personal relationships, particularly Frank’s enduring marriage to Lisa, and how these bonds have weathered his darkest times. Vicky and Frank delve into how group behaviours, loyalty, and the need for belonging can drive individuals to extremes, and how introspection, communication, and making amends can foster genuine transformation. The episode ultimately highlights the importance of understanding, rehabilitation, and meeting others halfway on the path to change.

About the Guest
Frank Portinari is a former senior member of the Ulster Defence Association whose life has taken him from the heart of London’s gang culture to Category A prison and, ultimately, to personal transformation. Born and raised in Camden, Frank once led a double life — working as a schoolkeeper while secretly involved in gun smuggling at the height of the Troubles.
After serving time in prison, Frank made the difficult decision to walk away from extremism and rebuild his life. He now runs The Dark Side of Camden walking tour, offering a raw, honest, and educational look at the area’s murky past, including his own. Frank is also the author of Left Right Loyalist: From One Extreme to Another, a memoir tracing his journey through radical politics, violence, and redemption.
Through speaking, storytelling, and his lived experience, Frank sheds light on the psychology of gang culture, radicalisation, and the behaviours that shape us — and how they can be changed.
