We know the common narrative that the makr of the beast is a future technology that we await for that will impose itself upon the world to bring the image of the Beast that everyone will have to choose to worship or will be killed. But we have to fit every technology into the system to test it.
Through the eras we have had different accusations and speculations, but they are merely that. No one knows for sure if there will be a mark and what it might be without supposing the next latest device. However, taking it from a practical level, it is something opposed to god and a mark received due to that.
We trace the modern doctrine from the Plymouth Brethren and John Darby to the circles of the occult and claim of Aleister Crowley that he was the Beast. Despite that, the Darby and Scofield interpretation of Pretribulation Rapture and dispensation theory led to modern day speculations of occult images and symbols as what to look for in interpretation. yet that is not necessarily based on scripture itself.
