Hey everybody! We got another Tom Rhodes banger this week! Tom and I got cut off early last week so he offered to have another chat, even though the last one was great. What a guy. If you’re not familiar with Tom Rhodes, he’s had an epic comedy career: he’s hosted and starred in TV shows, toured the globe, performed on every continent (except Antarctica), and is the host of a long-running podcast (“Tom Rhodes Smart Camp”). He’s also a dear friend who has met my mother and with whom I share a love of Ja Rule.
In this convo (part deux!), we discuss even more of his international experiences, including the time he performed for a Saudi prince and his “harem” in the Seychelles (and the important lesson he learned about skincare on that trip).
Normally I don’t spend much time speaking with guests about politics, but we even spend some time at the intersection of comedy and politics in this chat, and Tom gives his input on a certain recent event at MSG, and why he considers (the website formerly known as) Twitter a “hate faucet”.
We explore some of the challenges and joys of international comedy and audiences, Tom shares his evolution as a comedy writer, and what he is constantly looking for in order to be able to create fresh material over the years. We also talk about a dear friend and touch on what it means to be a good friend, not only to others but to yourself, and how to continue to grow over the years.
With all the stuff going on out there, it’s hard not to get down sometimes, but hopefully after listening to this conversation, you too will be saying “Hooray for Humanity”!
You can find out more about Tom Rhodes and where he will be making humans laugh next on his website www.tomrhodes.net.
