Dr. Karla Peña has over 17 years of experience in education, leadership, and equity in PreK–8 education. As the executive director of instruction for Houston Independent School District, she supports schools in delivering high-quality instruction to ensure student success. Karla previously served as director of student services and, as principal, transformed her campus to achieve National Blue Ribbon recognition, two Texas Honor Roll distinctions, and consistent "A" ratings.

Karla is a dynamic and results-driven educational leader who has demonstrated the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with school districts and educational stakeholders. She excels at developing and implementing strategies that result in measurable improvements in student outcomes and educational equity. Karla earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and a master’s degree in school administration from Texas A&M International University, and an Ed.D. in educational leadership and administration from Texas A&M University - Commerce.
