Increase in the teaching of Irish in second-level schools in the north.

Ardú ar mhúineadh na Gaeilge i scoileanna dara leibhéal ó thuaidh.

Irish is being taught in the first three years in 42% of second-level schools in the North, a significant increase from 35% in 2023, according to new research conducted by Queen’s University Belfast for the British Council.

Tá an Ghaeilge á múineadh sna chéad trí bliana i 42 faoin gcéad de scoileanna dara leibhéal sa Tuaisceart, ar ardú suntsasach é sin ó 35 faoin gcéad in 2023, de réir taighde nua a rinne Ollscoil na Banríona i mBéal Feirste i gcomhair an British Council.

As with the A-level years, and with the exception of English, research shows that Irish is the second most studied language after Spanish.

Mar leis na blianta A-leibhéal, agus diomaite den Bhéarla, léiríonn an taighde go bhfuil an Ghaeilge ar an dara teanga is mó a ndéantar staidéar uirthi i ndiaidh na Spáinnise.

For the first time ever, Spanish is also the most widely taught language in the first three years.

Den chéad uair riamh, is í an Spáinnis an teanga is mó a mhúintear sna chéad trí bliana freisin.

Spanish is taught in the first three years in 84.8% of second-level schools in the North, compared to 81% of schools where French is taught.

Múintear Spáinnis sna chéad trí bliana in 84.8 faoin gcéad de scoileanna dara leibhéal an Tuaiscirt, i gcomparáid leis an 81 faoin gcéad de scoileanna ina múintear Fraincis.

French was taught in 90% of schools in 2023.

Bhí Fraincis á múineadh i 90 faoin gcéad de scoileanna in 2023.

There has also been a significant decline in the teaching of German in second- level schools.

Tá meath suntasach tagtha ar mhúineadh na Gearmáinise i scoileanna dara leibhéal chomh maith.

That language was being taught in the first three years in 638 schools in 2024, compared to 1,390 schools in 2002.

Bhí an teanga sin á múineadh sna chéad trí bliana i 638 scoil in 2024, i gcomórtas le 1,390 scoil in 2002.

The research also states that approximately 30 other languages are spoken at home by second-level students in the North, including Arabic, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese and Romanian.

Deirtear sa taighde freisin go bhfuil tuairim is 30 teanga eile á labhairt sa bhaile ag daltaí dara leibhéal sa Tuaisceart, lena n-áirítear Araibis, Bulgáiris, Liotuáinis, Mandairínis, Polainnis, Portaingéilis agus Rómáinis.

70.5% of schools are giving these students the opportunity to take exams in their home language.

Tá 70.5 faoin gcéad de scoileanna ag tabhairt deis do na daltaí sin scrúduithe a dhéanamh ina dteanga baile.
