Academic review article from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health titled "Global Monitoring of Water Supply and Sanitation: History, Methods and Future Challenges." Authored by a collaborative group from the University of North Carolina, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO), the article critically examines the history and methods of international monitoring for drinking water and sanitation, particularly focusing on the Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP). The authors explain how JMP, supported by WHO and UNICEF, tracks progress toward global targets like the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) using data from national censuses and household surveys, rather than government-provided figures. Finally, the review highlights significant limitations in current JMP methods—such as not adequately addressing water quality, equity of access, or non-household services—while discussing future needs for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) monitoring.
