About Tony Selvaggio:

Tony Selvaggio is the Founder and President of The Digital Education Foundation, Inc. He is also the CEO and Founder of eSmart Recycling, a mission-driven business that combines environmental sustainability with social impact by recycling technology and providing underserved communities with access to computers and digital education.

Originally from Venezuela, Tony came to the U.S. in 2011 and built his career around using business as a tool for social good. Through eSmart Recycling, he has donated nearly 3,000 computers to over 50 nonprofit organizations, primarily in the Tampa Bay area.

In this episode, Jim and Tony Selvaggio discuss:

  • How e-waste can be repurposed to bridge the digital divide
  • The importance of social entrepreneurship in modern business
  • Why sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand
  • The challenges of changing consumer mindsets about recycling
  • How small actions can drive big impact in communities

Key Takeaways:

  • The devices we discard still hold value. With proper recycling and repurposing, old electronics can become a gateway to education and opportunity for students in need.
  • A purpose-driven business can be both impactful and profitable. When sustainability is embedded into a company’s DNA, it benefits both the environment and the bottom line.
  • One of the biggest challenges in recycling is shifting mindsets. People are more likely to recycle when they understand the real value of what they throw away.
  • Collaboration is key to creating a sustainable future. Governments, businesses, and individuals all play a role in making e-waste recycling more effective and widespread.
  • Small actions create ripple effects. Whether it's donating an old laptop or educating others about sustainability, every effort contributes to a larger movement for change.

"We have a moral duty to use our businesses as a force for social good." – Tony Selvaggio
