Takeaways:
Don’t Forget God
- Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old.
- Solomon tells his readers to remember God: Honor, obey, and prioritize God while you have strength and clarity to do so.
- Don’t forget about God, he says. He also reminds us that while we are living wisdom will guide us. He says it is painful, but helpful.
Painful but Helpful
- Sometimes wisdom is painful. You feel it because applying wisdom requires that you change. You learn.
- If you want to live wisely, it is not always going to be comfortable. Too often we trade wisdom for comfort.
Judgement is Coming
- Fear God and obey his commands. Judgement is coming after this life.
- Fearing God does not mean to cower and hide from him. Fear of God is a deep respect that he is powerful and holds everything in his hands.
- Two judgements that the Bible talks about:
- The Great White Throne Judgement - for unbelievers
- The Judgement Seat of Christ - for believers
- Judgement is not a threat, but a reminder our lives have weight and consequence
Discussion Questions:
- If a person thinks they can “get right with God” later, what does that reveal about their heart?
- Can you think of any examples of how people choose comfort over wisdom?
- What kinds of emotions do you feel when you think about God’s Judgement?
- Why is it wise to fear God and obey his commandments?
