Amazon Web Services (AWS) suffered a major outage that disrupted thousands of websites and apps worldwide, from banking and travel booking platforms to everyday services like coffee orders and social media.

It was one of the most significant global internet disruptions since last year’s CrowdStrike malfunction that grounded flights and crippled hospital systems.

While AWS has since restored its systems, the incident raises bigger questions about the fragility of the internet’s infrastructure, the risks of overreliance on a few cloud providers, and what businesses can do to protect themselves the next time something like this happens.
