Eugenics—the pseudo-scientific movement that targeted "undesirable" populations for reproductive elimination—isn't just a historical footnote. It's a shadow that continues to darken the lives of Black women today through systemic healthcare inequities, environmental racism, and targeted reproductive control.
When we dig into the troubling history of forced sterilization in America, we uncover stories of young Black women—some as young as 14—who were sterilized without their knowledge or consent. They were marked with an "X" on forms they couldn't read, told they were receiving medicine to help with reproduction, when in reality, they were being permanently denied their reproductive rights. This wasn't ancient history; this happened within our parents' and grandparents' lifetimes.
The assault continues in more subtle ways today. Environmental racism places Black mothers in neighborhoods with dangerous levels of lead, mold, and air pollution. Research from Howard University confirms that these environmental factors directly impact birth weight, neurological development, and maternal health. Black communities are exposed to 56% more particulate pollution than they produce—a direct result of racist housing policies that place power plants and waste sites near Black neighborhoods.
Healthcare inequality compounds these environmental factors, with studies showing Black women wait 20 months longer than white women before receiving fertility care. This isn't random—it stems from limited accessibility, affordability issues, and persistent physician bias based on longstanding eugenic stereotypes. Even the geographic distribution of reproductive health services reveals the ongoing eugenic agenda: inner-city areas get Planned Parenthood facilities while suburban communities get fertility clinics.
