Phil speaks with Phil speaks with Dr Bill Swannie Senior Lecturer Thomas More Law School Australian Catholic University, to delve into Australia's Racial Discrimination Act, prompted by a recent Federal Court decision.
The court found that controversial Muslim cleric Wissam Haddad violated the Act, ruling his online speeches were "fundamentally racist and antisemitic" and deeply offensive to Jewish Australians. Importantly, the court also clarified that criticism of Israel, Zionism, or the Israel Defense Forces does not constitute antisemitism and thus doesn't breach the law.
This finding offers significant guidance for the ongoing discussion about how to define antisemitism in Australia.
