Manage episode 465624523 series 2929998
Dear friends,
One can understand the Holy Bible between two poles: promise and fulfillment. God makes promises and then he fulfills them. God is not like us. We make promises but often don't fulfill them. God, on the other hand, always fulfills his promises.
We see this promise and fulfillment in today's readings.
In the 1st reading, God makes an extraordinary promise to King David. "I will give you fame as great as the fame of the greatest... Your House and your sovereignty will always stand secure before me and your throne be established for ever.”’
Our Psalm reiterates this promise " I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your dynasty for ever"
St Paul in the 2nd reading asks us to give glory to this God who is able do gift us with his grace to live according to his promise.
We see the promise of God in today's Gospel being fulfilled. The angel Gabriel tells a Jewish maiden that she will conceive a son - by the overshadowing of the Most High. That child, he says, will receive "the throne of his ancestor David."
Friends, we are called to be like David, like Mary who opened themselves to the power of God, his mercy, and promises so that He can work his wonders through us. God never fails to deliver on His promise. For him nothing is impossible. Amen.
