In this SUNSCREEN FILM FESTIVAL interview series, host Nanette Wiser dives into Jim O'Heir tour de force in El Rebote, a darkly surreal short indie film set in Barcelona exploring love, loss, grief, masculinity and redemption. The 20th anniversary festival is 4/24-4/27. https://www.sunscreenfilmfestival.com/index.html#schedule
Jim O'Heir is an American actor and comedian best known for his role as Jerry Gergich on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation (2009–2015). He began his career in Chicago's theater scene, co-founding the sketch comedy troupe White Noise and performing in productions like Stumpy's Gang and The Book of Blanche. O'Heir has appeared in numerous television series, including Friends, Boston Legal, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Better Call Saul, and starred in the Comedy Central series Strip Mall (2000). In 2017, he won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for his role on The Bold and the Beautiful. Beyond acting, he co-hosts the Parks and Recollection podcast and authored Welcome to Pawnee, a behind-the-scenes book about Parks and Recreation, released in November 2024.
FILM SYNOPSIS: After a heart-wrenching divorce, a middle-aged American tourist returns alone to Barcelona—the city where he once proposed—to bury the remnants of his past. As he wanders the ancient streets, he finds himself swept into the orbit of a group of reckless young locals who pull him into an intoxicating night of drugs, laughter, violence, and surreal encounters. With each moment, the boundary between memory and reality blurs. Haunted by visions of his former love and the life he lost, the Tourist spirals through a kaleidoscope of pleasure and pain, desperately grasping for meaning in a city that mirrors his inner chaos. When a violent outburst and a drug-fueled descent leave him physically and spiritually broken, he awakens on a beach with his fingers severed and his body failing. But in the wake of that collapse, a simple act of compassion—a sandcastle rebuilt with a lost little girl—offers the Tourist one final chance at redemption. El Rebote is a surreal and visceral meditation on grief, masculinity, and the strange, beautiful ways in which we find the will to go on.
THE DIRECTOR: Lukas Lane is an actor, filmmaker, and playwright currently pursuing his MFA in Dramatic Writing at NYU Tisch. His work often explores underdogs and subcultures, from an anarcho-commune in Berkeley to kids in the juvenile detention system, rural hillbilly influencers, and the dark underworld of Manhattan’s nightlife. As a filmmaker, Lukas has directed and produced a range of short films and web series for brands such as Ford, VANS, and the HFPA. His stage plays have been produced at UC Berkeley’s Barestage and NYU. In 2020, he collaborated with a group of LA-based poets to write the feature film Summertime, which premiered on opening night at Sundance. Recently, Lukas’s latest project, El Rebote, a Barcelona-based short film he wrote and directed starring Emmy Award-winning actor Jim O’Heir (Parks and Recreation), is slated to premiere on the international festival circuit.. He is represented by Innovative Artists as an actor.
