For Hurricane Prep Week, host Nanette Wiser highlights what you need to start doing now - create a hurricane preparedness plan, gather essential supplies, and learn their evacuation zone. Additionally, it's crucial to stay informed about local warnings and alerts, and take steps to protect their homes and families. Thank you to Pinellas County and AAA for these storm tips. https://pinellas.gov/hurricane-guide/
Create a Hurricane Preparedness Plan: Determine your evacuation zone and plan your evacuation routes. Have a communication plan in place to stay connected with family and friends. Consider a backup plan for power outages, such as a generator or a location with power.
Gather Essential Supplies: Create a "go bag" with at least three days of supplies for each family member, including water, food, medications, and first-aid supplies. Have a well-stocked home emergency kit with supplies for at least two weeks. Include a battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a flashlight. Keep important documents, such as insurance policies and medical records, safe. Stock up on cash, as ATMs may be out of service. Don't forget about pets and special needs friends and families when making your list.
Protect Your Home: Reinforce your home by securing windows, doors, and roofs with shutters, tape, or other protective measures. Trim trees and shrubs to prevent falling branches. Install sewer backflow valves to prevent sewage backup.
Stay Informed: Sign up for local alerts and warnings via Alert Pinellas or other local notification systems. Follow local news and social media for updates on hurricane conditions.
Evacuation Plan: If you need to evacuate, seek shelter with family or friends, in a hotel, or at a designated public shelter. If you own pets, make sure to bring them to a pet-friendly shelter.
After the Storm: Be prepared for potential power outages and disruptions to services. Follow local authorities' instructions for returning to your home after the storm.
