Hello St. Pete! Welcome to Bulls by the Bay, your weekly update from USF St. Petersburg. I’m Colleen Cherry, Community Relations Specialist, giving you the latest news from our vibrant waterfront campus.
Summer Semester and 60th Anniversary Exhibit
Our Summer classes are officially underway! We’re welcoming 250 students who are moving back onto campus. The energy is high, and we have an incredible lineup of events planned for Week of Welcome to help our students feel connected and supported from day one. Also, be sure to stop by the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, where a new exhibit celebrates the 60th anniversary of USF St. Petersburg. The display features photos from our archives that showcase the history and evolution of our campus through the decades.
Mental Health Research Center named for Sen. Darryl Rouson
This week Gov. Ron DeSantis and Board of Trustees Vice Chair Mike Griffin announced our intent to establish a new center for substance abuse and mental health research at USF, named for Sen. Darryl Rouson. , who has openly shared how he overcame his own challenges with mental health. The center will conduct rigorous research that will advance the scientific understanding of the relationship between substance abuse and mental health issues, including improving treatment outcomes and reducing the societal impacts of substance abuse and mental health conditions. Rouson has been a champion for USF since being elected to the Florida Legislature in 2008, and has openly shared how he overcame his challenges with mental health. The center will build upon the state’s investment in USF’s efforts to address mental health and addiction. During the 2024 legislative session, USF was awarded $5 million in recurring funds to create the Florida Center for Behavioral Health Workforce. Learn more.
Summer program introduces research to undergraduate students
A group of undergraduate students from USF is spending the summer building valuable research and career skills while receiving compensation for their efforts. The Summer Academy for Investigative Learning (SAIL) program gives students an early, hands-on introduction to research techniques and shows them impactful work taking place across Tampa Bay. The six-week paid program combines educational workshops, field trips to research facilities in the St. Petersburg Innovation District and the chance to present their own projects at a research symposium. The symposium will take place in the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library on Wednesday, July 23. Learn more.
