Two delvers set off into the depths of the Heart on orders from their handlers in the City Above. One, a Gnoll Hound, is forced to be there by the moonsilver collar he wears. The other, a Drow Witch, struggles with her past and is inexplicably drawn to the City Beneath. When they are tapped to escort a skittish academic to a deep Vermissian station, they find themselves embroiled in a plot to harness the suffering of a trapped creature to create a bomb, caught between their obligations and the Heart’s desire to set the creature free.
