This episode will discuss oxygen debt.

Anaerobic respiration occurs when muscles lack sufficient oxygen during intense activity. This process generates lactic acid as a byproduct.

The accumulation of lactic acid leads to muscle pain, fatigue, and reduced contractile efficiency. Consequently, an oxygen debt develops, representing the extra oxygen needed to eliminate this lactic acid.

The body repays this debt by transporting lactic acid to the liver, where it is converted using oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. Heavy breathing post-exercise aids in replenishing the necessary oxygen.
