In 2023, authorities received a call about possible human body parts in plastic bags outside of a home in Tarzana, California. When officers arrived at the scene, there were no bags in front of the house and no body parts to be found. The next morning, a man found a torso in the dumpster, which ignited an exhaustive investigation.

As the investigation unfolded, the authorities released that Sam's wife, Mei Li, and his in-laws, Yanxiang Wang and Gaoshen Li, were missing.
