Rad (1986): A BMX Cult Classic

Rad is a high-octane, feel-good sports drama that became a cult favorite for BMX enthusiasts and ’80s movie fans alike. Directed by Hal Needham, the movie follows Cru Jones (Bill Allen), a small-town teenager with big dreams of becoming a BMX champion. When the ultimate BMX race, Helltrack, comes to his hometown, Cru defies the odds, overcomes obstacles, and takes on professional riders to prove he’s got what it takes.

Packed with thrilling bike stunts, a killer ’80s soundtrack, and a touch of romance with Christian Hollings (played by Lori Loughlin), Rad perfectly captures the youthful energy and rebellious spirit of its time. Featuring jaw-dropping BMX sequences choreographed by real-life stunt riders and themes of perseverance and following your dreams, this movie has left a lasting impression on fans.

Although it flew under the radar upon release, Rad has gained a devoted following over the years, earning its place as a nostalgic gem and an iconic sports movie of the ’80s. With its heart, action, and plenty of BMX flair, Rad continues to inspire new generations of riders and moviegoers.
