Ruby Franke rose to online fame as the matriarch of 8 Passengers, a YouTube family vlog that gained millions of views for its portrayal of traditional parenting and everyday life. But behind the scenes, a much darker reality was unfolding, one that came to light in 2023 when her 12 year old son escaped from a home in southern Utah, showing clear signs of abuse. The disturbing case led to Franke’s arrest, alongside her business partner Jodi Hildebrandt, and exposed a deeply troubling pattern of control, punishment, and exploitation.
