Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way! I'm your host Andrew McGivern for July 16th.Now today is National Hot Dog Day — a celebration of one of North America's most iconic and enduring comfort foods.

First introduced to the U.S. by German immigrants in the 1800s, the hot dog became a staple at ballparks, barbecues, and street corners. It’s more than just a quick bite — it’s a symbol of summer, nostalgia, and simple pleasures.

And it used to be called a frankfurter but somewhere along the line, the name hot dog became popular. Some say it was due to Germany falling into conflict with the USA so they made a more American sounding name...Kind of like how they tried to change French Fries to Freedom Fries a while back... or how in Canada as a result of the TACO Tariff BS, the americano has suddenly become the Canadiano...

Anyway, in honor of the day, here’s a fitting quote from newspaper columnist Doug Larson, who had a talent for finding wisdom in everyday life.

He once said...

"Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon."Doug Larson wrote for the Green Bay Press-Gazette for over 30 years, where his syndicated column offered witty, reflective takes on life’s small but meaningful details. His words often blended humor with subtle truths — like this one, which captures the irresistible allure of comfort food. Now, while National Hot Dog Day might inspire some folks to fire up the grill or seek out their favorite street vendor, I’ll probably be sitting this one out… we had more than our fair share of hot dogs on a couple recent camping trip. And after because... you know. Can't let a good wiener go bad.Let’s just say I’ve hit my hot dog quota for the month.Still, whether you’re indulging today or just smiling at the memory of your last perfectly charred dog, here’s to the little joys that make summer feel like summer.Happy National Hot Dog Day!That's going to do it for now. I'm Andrew McGivern signing off for today... but I'll be back tomorrow - same pod time, same pod station with another Daily Quote.
