In this episode of the Ranchonomics podcast, host John Haskell welcomes back Tyler Dawley to the podcast to continue their conversation on the challenges of raising chickens. We discuss creating environments that work with chickens’ instincts as well as the logistics of catching and transporting thousands of chickens at a time. Tyler provides information about efficiently sourcing feed for large numbers of birds, managing the rapid growth cycle of chickens, and how he gets chicks in large quantities for his operation.

Tyler Dawley is a guy who has lived in one spot his entire life. That spot is Big Bluff Ranch, the family ranch. Since he was a kid, driving the ranch truck looking through (not over) the steering wheel, he has found purpose and passion working with the land and animals. Since 2000, he has been driving innovations on the ranch. Everything from farmer's markets to grass-fed beef to pasture poultry to direct marketing over the internet. Currently, Big Bluff Ranch is one of the largest producers of organic, pasture raised, no corn/soy chicken on the west coast. Now raising the 4th generation of Dawley's on the ranch, Tyler knows way more about raising chickens on pasture than a normal person should. Ask him what's going on and the answer is always the same - "Just raising chickens and kids."

In this episode, we cover:

  • How to efficiently catch a large number of birds in order to transport
  • Finding a feed mill to source your chicken feed from
  • The logistics of sourcing chicks for a large operation
  • Managing the fast growth cycle of chickens
