Episode Summary:

In this Sport is Life episode, Ian Hawkins sits down with Andrew Swain, rugby commentator, seasoned journalist, and now curling enthusiast for a conversation that spans sport, storytelling, and serendipitous career moves. Swain reflects on his early love for cricket and rugby, how sport forged lifelong friendships, and the power of community and camaraderie that continues to shape his personal and professional life.

From late-night touring tales in Argentina to pivotal moments in the commentary box, including the unforgettable day he called Argentina’s first-ever win against the All Blacks after his young son briefly went missing, Andrew brings listeners into the raw, real and sometimes chaotic behind-the-scenes world of sports broadcasting. With reflections on resilience, connection, and seizing opportunities, this episode is a reminder that the spirit of sport is often less about winning and more about the stories, people, and moments that shape who we become.

About the Guest:

Andrew Swain is a seasoned sports journalist and broadcaster whose career spans more than two decades across television, radio, and digital media. From humble beginnings volunteering his time on radio, and then becoming a Street Teamer on Triple M, he moved into a Sports Reporter role at Fox Sports News, covering a wide array of major sporting events, and building a reputation for his engaging storytelling, and deep understanding of the games he covered.

A passionate rugby union and cricket fan from a young age, Swain’s early years in the industry saw him report on everything from NRL, international cricket, golf, football, and every other sport you can imagine. He turned his attention to rugby union as a producer - a sport he not only reported on, but also played at a first grade level, and continued with at Subbies and social level.

In recent years, Swain has become a familiar voice in Australian rugby union commentary, working with Stan Sport and Nine, where his work as a producer and on-air talent has helped shape the coverage of both grass roots, provincial and international rugby. Known for his knowledgeable commentary style, Swain has contributed significantly to the growing popularity and accessibility of rugby union in Australia.

More recently, Swain has discovered a new passion for the sport of Curling. He and his team, The Curlews, recently went to the National Championships representing Queensland, and tried to qualify for the Winter Olympics. Whilst they didn't quite make it this time, their passion will see them persevere and keep trying their hand.
