Today, John is guiding us through the story of United States v. Wong Kim Ark. This was a landmark Supreme Court case that took place in the 1890s. As the melting pot of the United States developed, many different ethnic and racial groups were discriminated against. This is the story of how xenophobia against Chinese immigrants led the US to develop the still-existing rule of birthright citizenship. Mr. Wong had been born in the US to immigrant parents, and traveled to China to visit family. But when he came back to the US, they wouldn't let him back in!
