When the sentient starship Orriona receives High Priestess Nienna's encrypted distress call on a frequency dead for thousands of years, she knows the impossible has happened—Contingency Starfall is active. The message is brief, urgent, and bears quantum authentication that can't be faked: an Axrathan diplomatic fleet is under attack, and Protocol Seven must be initiated immediately.
But there's a problem. Protocol Seven requires a crew. And Orriona has been operating alone for a very long time.
Her tactical assessment is swift and merciless: her autonomous functions, however advanced, cannot meet the mission requirements. She needs organic operators—specialists who can adapt, improvise, and handle the unpredictable chaos of a rescue operation five gates away.
Racing against time, her search leads to Edgepoint Station—a decaying twenty-four level frontier outpost where Council oversight fades and survival trumps regulations. It's not her first choice. But the distress call is growing more desperate, and Edgepoint offers something the pristine Inner Meridian stations don't: candidates who've learned to adapt under pressure, who operate outside rigid systems, who won't balk at an AI making command decisions.
As Orriona initiates docking protocols, one question remains: who will she find in the depths of Edgepoint Station willing to trust a sentient ship on a mission into the unknown?
