We explore an emerging question in social media: can we move beyond algorithms for addiction and design systems that support mental health? Our signals research reveals a complex landscape where immediate solutions, like teaching algorithmic literacy, exist alongside calls for emerging alternatives and policy changes. Through examining current research, platform experiments, and community-focused models, we uncover possibilities for how social media might evolve beyond engagement metrics towards wellbeing.
