Welcome back to the Stay Magic podcast! I'm Sara Walka, founder of The Sisters Enchanted. Today we're exploring the devil card in tarot and asking: Why do you keep choosing the cage when you already hold the key?

The devil card freaks people out, but it's one of the most misunderstood cards in tarot. It's not about external evil, it's about the chains we voluntarily wear and the cages we return to, even when we're quietly suffocating.

The traditional imagery shows two figures loosely chained together. The key detail? Those chains are loose enough to slip off. They're not trapped, they're choosing to stay.

You already know you have the power to change. But knowing you have the key and actually using it are two very different things.

Why don't we use it? Because what's on the other side feels terrifying:

  • Loss of identity
  • Fear of judgment
  • The unknown
  • Comfort in the status quo

I had a challenging relationship with a family member who was emotionally detached and had hurt me before. I kept reaching out, trying to fix things, rechaining myself to that situation because I was afraid of what it would mean about me if I let it go.

I already had the key. I just had to choose to be free and face the discomfort of what happens next.

The devil card is about choosing to allow yourself to be free. It's about understanding why you're afraid to change and what you're getting from staying stuck.

Try this three-card spread:

  1. What am I getting from staying?
  2. What am I afraid I'll lose if I leave?
  3. Who do I become when I finally walk away?

What would I do if I weren't afraid of being free?

This question breaks the spell. It cuts through the fear and reminds you that the cage is a choice and so is freedom.
