In episode 186 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick takes you through his own timeline of addiction, mapping out his earliest memories of alcohol, the influences around him, and the patterns that shaped his drinking and other addictive behaviours.

This isn't about blame; it’s about awareness.

When we start to see where our beliefs, habits, and associations with alcohol come from, we can finally begin to question them.

Patrick shares some of the key moments in his life that shaped how he saw myself, what he thought was normal, and how alcohol (and other things) became a way to escape, fit in, or feel something different.

This exercise has been incredibly powerful for Patrick and for his clients. It’s not something most people think to do, but when you lay it all out, you start to understand the ‘why’ behind your drinking.

He also talks about the impact of implicit and explicit memories, how we don’t always remember the details, but we remember how things made us feel. And those feelings can drive behaviours for years without us even realising it.

If you’ve ever wonderedwhy you drink, why certain patterns keep repeating, or why it feels hard to stop, this episode will give you a new way of looking at it.

And if you want to try this exercise for yourself but feel like you need support, get in touch, I’d love to help you work through it.
