Manage episode 522337776 series 3023021
Chris speaks with Jiu Jitsu black belt Roy Dean about everything from his early start earning black belts in the traditional martial arts of Judo, Aikikai Aikido, Seibukan Jujutsu and Enshin Itto Ryu Batto Jutsu, a Japanese sword system, all the way to achieving his 4th degree in BJJ under Roy Harris. They discuss martial arts in general, but mostly their shared passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the best ways to learn, to teach, and Roy's unique approach to it all as colored by his history and his training under Roy Harris. Roy has a great website and produces a lot of excellent video content for the Jiu Jitsu community often in collaboration with his student and friend Rick Ellis who was on episode #39. Roy also has two books out about his martial arts journey, "The Martial Apprentice" and "Becoming the Black Belt" (Chris has read the latter and highly recommends). He is also producing a new coffee table style book called "Groundswell, the Rise of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in America" which is a beautiful piece of work that honors the history of the art, and you can see the fully funded Kickstarter page for here.
