Growing up in Jamaica, Queens, surrounded by talented individuals who went on to achieve success in various fields, Carl was immersed in a competitive culture that pushed him to strive for excellence. His parents, who encouraged him to focus on academics and sports, played a significant role in shaping his worldview. Carl's neighborhood was also home to a vibrant handball scene, which provided a venue for him to test his skills and push himself to be the best.
Carl's educational journey took him to Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he studied for undergrad. He shares stories about his experiences on campus, living in Riviera Woods, and working as a skycap at LaGuardia Airport after graduation. Carl's early career was marked by struggles to find a job, largely due to the economic conditions of the 1980s. However, he persevered, took on various roles, and eventually landed a job with the federal government, where he worked on projects such as the revitalization of Downtown Silver Spring and the development of a port museum.
After leaving the federal government, Carl joined Earl Graves at his Pepsi plant, where they worked together to drive the franchise's success. The experience laid the foundation for his later work at Verizon, where he served as a family adviser, helping small minority businesses win government contracts. Carl emphasizes the importance of consistency, past performance, and building relationships in achieving success.
