How to Cope with Parenthood

Becoming a parent is something that is really hard to prepare for, but there are lots of services and support systems in place to help guide and support parents along the way. One of these is the organisation COPE which provides support for the emotional challenges of becoming a parent.

This week on The Expert Guide to Parenthood Podcast we interview Founder and Executive Director of COPE Dr Nicole Highet

COPE is a not-for-profit organisation devoted to reducing the impacts of emotional and mental health problems in the pre and postnatal periods. Dr Nicole Highet joins us to talk about the emotional changes we all face becoming new parents and what support and services COPE offers new parents.

We discuss:

- The emotional challenges of becoming a new parent.

- Some of the huge adjustments and challenges new parents face recovering from birth, breastfeeding, feeding challenges, being responsible for a little baby, lack of sleep, adjustment in relationships.

- How do you know when these are ‘normal feelings of adjusting’ to becoming a new parent or something more?

- How common postnatal anxiety and depression is after having a baby

- Services on offer from COPE

- How COPE defines "support" for new parents, and why is it so important in those early months and years

- The difference getting support early make to your parenting journey.

- Nicole talks about the biggest challenge she sees new parents facing today, and how COPE is helping to address that

- Nicole shares her top 3 tips for any parent, whether they're expecting or in the early stages of parenthood.
