Acupuncture may help reduce the risk of miscarriage for pregnant women by enhancing overall pregnancy stability. One key way it works is by improving blood flow to important early structures like the yolk sac—which provides initial nourishment to the embryo—and later to the placenta, which sustains the growing baby with oxygen and nutrients. This increased circulation helps prevent hypoxia, a condition where there's insufficient oxygen reaching the developing tissues. Hypoxia can contribute to miscarriage by damaging vital cells in the embryo or placenta, such as trophoblast cells, leading to cell death (like through a process called ferroptosis) and ultimately pregnancy loss, especially in the first trimester when oxygen supply is critical for proper development. By boosting blood flow and reducing stress, acupuncture offers a complementary approach alongside medical care to potentially lower these risks and promote a smoother pregnancy.
