Traditional democratic systems need modernising for the 21st century. Voting once every few years is insufficient for addressing urgent challenges like climate change. Citizens need to have more meaningful involvement in political decisions beyond just protesting.

Nigel Shipley is an artist and member of Extinction Rebellion in Bristol, England. He has been involved with the organisation both nationally and locally since its beginning.
