On the rainy morning of April 18, 2016, fitness instructor Terri “Missy” Bevers arrived at the Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian, Texas, to lead her 5 a.m. “gladiator boot camp.” Minutes after pulling into the parking lot around 4:18 a.m., the 45-year-old mother of three was murdered inside the church by an unknown assailant dressed in full police tactical gear.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect entering the church nearly 30 minutes earlier, roaming the halls with an unidentifiable, stiff gait and head-to-toe concealment, including a helmet and gloves. Despite footage capturing Bevers’ arrival, the actual attack was not recorded. She was later discovered with fatal puncture wounds to her head and chest by students arriving for class.

The attack appeared to have been carefully planned. Investigators believe the killer used details Bevers had posted publicly on Facebook about the class’s location and time to coordinate the murder. Despite signs of forced entry and apparent burglary, nothing was taken, suggesting the scene had been staged to mislead investigators.

Initial suspicion fell on those closest to Bevers, including her husband, Brandon Bevers, and her father-in-law, Randy Bevers. Brandon, who was on a fishing trip in Mississippi, was ruled out. Randy drew attention when he dropped off a bloodied shirt at a dry cleaner days after the murder, but the blood was determined to be from a dog, and his alibi checked out.

Bevers’ personal life also came under scrutiny. Police uncovered evidence of marital struggles and extramarital communications, including a disturbing LinkedIn message from a stranger three days before her death. Still, no suspect has been tied to these communications.

Other leads, such as a mysterious Nissan Altima seen near the crime scene and a former tactical officer with connections to the church, failed to yield a breakthrough. Despite involvement from federal investigators and forensic experts, including a podiatrist who concluded the suspect’s gait was likely due to heavy gear, the case remains unsolved.

Years later, Midlothian police continue to investigate. As of 2021, the case is still active, but authorities admit they are no closer to identifying the killer. The brutal murder of Missy Bevers endures as one of Texas’s most haunting unsolved crimes.
