As writers, we know that how we say something matters as much as what we say. The right words, arranged with care, can influence thought and stir emotion—or so we hope.

The divide between creative prose and academic jargon was once stark. But then came the 1970s and 80s, when scientists like Isaac Asimov, Arthur Clarke, Carl Sagan, and Stephen Hawking showed us how to bridge that gap. Their books demystified science and made it thrillingly accessible. They kicked the doors down for voices like Neil deGrasse Tyson to follow.

Today, writers are doing this for history, medicine, and other fields once confined to the academy. They go beyond dry facts and use storytelling to make these subjects come alive. In history, we call this narrative history—a way of weaving the past into a compelling story that connects us to the humanity of those who lived it.

Anirudh Kanisetti is one such writer. His debut book, Lords of the Deccan, has earned critical acclaim for its engaging blend of scholarship and storytelling. He humanizes historical figures, breathing life into their struggles and triumphs, and makes medieval politics accessible to all.

In this episode of The Literary City, Anirudh joins me from New Delhi to talk about Lords of the Deccan, his upcoming book on the Cholas, and the craft of writing history that resonates.

Doesn't this promise to be a fascinating conversation... so dive in.
