A Minecraft Movie, A Working Man and A More!

16 years ago in 2009 a game developer called Markus “Notch” Persson started seeing blocks in a game called Infiniminer… this sparked his imagination and he began to create blocks everywhere… everything in blocky shapes. simple colours and perfectly cuboid construction pieces. In 2011 his cave based game came fully to fruition and the world was introduced to Minecraft. 14 years later that game has had millions of players, and it’s now a major feature film with Jack Black and Jason Momoa. Is the Movie as creatively free and experimental as the game its based on? You’ll find out soon.

We also checked out A Working Man, the new Jason Statham Movie that’s not based on a video game but a comic book written by Chuck Dixon, directed by David Ayer, adapted by none other than Sylvester Stallone.

Dion, Jill and Quinny are you hard working miners digging deep into this episode to find the valuable ore of exciting film-making and to sift through the slurry of tedious cinematic drek. Buckle up folks!!

Synopsis: A Minecraft Movie:

A mysterious portal pulls four misfits into the Overworld, a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master the terrain while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected crafter named Steve.

Synopsis: A Working Man:

Levon Cade left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life of working construction. However, when human traffickers kidnap his boss’s daughter, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined.

Dion

Hello and welcome to the periodic table. It was a Minecraft name is Dion. And tonight I’m joined by Jill and Quinny villager Quinny, as I like to call him. Oh, it’s a film frenzy. That’s what we’re doing, right? Isn’t it? Film frenzy.

Quinny

Yeah, we’re coming at you with films every which way. Yeah. All the shapes. We’re making colors. It’s gone.

Speaker

Wow.

Dion

Off we’re we’re coming at you. We’re coming with a with a blue collar film spectacular tonight, which was mainly because one’s about working in the mines and one’s about. Being a working man and another film that I accidentally said in the original schedule which wasn’t out yet, but that’s why I got and more and whatever else we decided to talk about. Yeah, we’re doing a Minecraft movie and a working man, and anything else with a in the title. OK. OK, we’ll we’ll just do anora. There you go. How’s that? Yeah, yeah. Wonderful.

Quinny

It better go looking. Just throwing it out.

Jill

There seen. It.

Quinny

Just you’re you’re making it up as you go. I’m excited by this.

Speaker 2

Oh yeah.

Dion

No, we we well, look, I mean to be completely honest, I didn’t really have much engagement with a Minecraft movie having never played Minecraft, but now I. Understand a little bit more.

Speaker

And.

Jill

Where am I?

Dion

And I don’t really have much engagement with Jason Statham movies because I can’t call them anything but him. Anything with Jason Stratham, it’s now built into my lexicon. I can’t call him Statham.

Quinny

Was going to say do do you intentionally call him Stratham every time?

Dion

No, not not anymore. Now I just say stuff. It’s like, oh, yeah, I went saw that new Jason Statham film and people like who you mean Statham? And I’m like, yeah, Stratham.

Jill

Yeah, because it just sounds like you’re being wrong. Yeah. Yeah, and not on purpose. Yeah.

Quinny

It’s no longer a.

Dion

Joke I’ve said it so many times as a joke that now it’s not a joke. Right. Yeah. Yeah, it was ironic and funny, and now it’s just like, no, I just call him Jason Stratham.

Jill

Yeah. Anyway, ironic and funny only for you. I think.

Quinny

Yeah. Anyway, scraping left to right all over the.

Dion

Speak speaking, Speaking of an ironic, uh, not very funny a working.

Quinny

Man. Oh, OK. We’re going to the working man first.

Dion

I know well. We just watched the Minecraft trailer. So you. Know we can talk. Which one?

Speaker 2

Yeah.

Dion

You’re talking. It doesn’t matter what order. We do the bin. Does it really? No.

Jill

No, it doesn’t. No. Well, we did. Just watch the Minecraft trailer so it kind of makes sense.

Quinny

Sure. We should dig on into Minecraft. Let’s.

Jill

To talk about that.

Speaker

Yeah.

Dion

Let’s talk about the movie that almost broke up the Tenacious D band.

Jill

I mean.

Quinny

Was it really the Minecraft?

Dion

Yeah. It was it it. Well, I mean, but that was what it was. The main problem, like, oh, my God, I have to remain that because I had this whole movie coming out that he was shooting in New Zealand. What? When he was in tour in Australia doing the band he was like, Ohh, because it was shot in New Zealand and he came over to do concerts and then he went back to New Zealand and it was like a whole thing.

Speaker

Hmm.

Jill

Right, right. Yeah. Have the undo. Undo being cancelled.

Quinny

OK, I’ve gotta say I’m. Yeah, make sure that you don’t say anything about the the Cheeto or, you know, say anything as as controversial as, Gee, I wish somebody had shot him and then walk it on back and say, actually, that was all Kyle. That was my buddy Kyle, who I’ve been friends with for 20 something years. And we’ve played songs and we’ve been rock gods. But I’m gonna do the single least ******* rock thing that a rock star has ever ******* do. I have some strong opinions about Jack Black in this particular moment. I think it’s school deeply on rock.

Dion

Sure. I mean school. Of rock. Teaching kids to rock out and and rebel. Yeah, or, you know, not totally or.

Quinny

I liked Jack Black. Yeah. So, Jill, you’ve never played. Minecraft.

Jill

A 41 year old woman. Quinine. What’s the answer? Do you?

Quinny

Think I don’t know. You may may have accidentally.

Jill

I’m well well out of the target. Demographic for Minecraft.

Dion

Yes. Have you?

Quinny

Ever played Minecraft?

Dion

I’m playing it right now. No, I’ve never played. I’ve never played Minecraft before my last.

Jill

I mean, are these cubes around? Us.

Quinny

Yeah. Yeah, I think you’re saying, is this what we’re doing?

Jill

This Minecraft, yeah, is this Minecraft I?

Speaker

Yeah, yeah.

Dion

I mean, it’s almost impossible to not know what Minecraft is because yeah.

Jill

I mean, I know what it is, but I haven’t played it.

Dion

Yeah, it’s such a phenomenon and it and you know, basically it could have been. You know, I think it is. It’s it’s a very accessible game. It’s very, you know, plentiful around the world. It was free, wasn’t it? I think like basically you can go in there and have your own mic, play Minecraft for free kind of stuff. I don’t know. I can’t remember, but yeah, everyone was playing it for it for a while there and some. And now what I love about it is that Minecraft is starting to become nostalgic because some people who used to play it as a child have now grown up into, like, late teenage, early 20s kind of stuff. And they’re like, oh, yeah, Minecraft.

Jill

Yeah. And the turn around on this stuff. Is feeling very.

Quinny

Quick. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is unfortunately something that happens as you get older. Is the young people grow up faster and like, I was talking to somebody at work the other day and they were. Talking to a group of their. Students and they said something about the year 2000 and realised that most of the people they were talking to didn’t weren’t alive at that point. And you’re like Christ.

Dion

So so just. To clarify my own statements there, just so I know right? Minecraft came out in 2011. Ohh, so OK. That is 14 years ago. So imagine if you were.

Quinny

Oh.

Jill

I just.

Dion

Speaker 2

Ah.

Dion

And you played Minecraft and you’re now 20. And you’re like, oh, yeah, Minecraft.

Jill

Quinny

Yeah, that’s OK if if you.

Speaker

Alright.

Quinny

Were 10 when it came out, you are now.

Jill

Sure. But late 1990 was only 10 years ago.

Dion

Quinny

Yeah. And the 70s were 20 years ago. So I don’t understand.

Dion

It was it you said, right? You. I I catch it in the same way for Star Wars to go. Oh, yeah. I watched Empire Strikes Back and then episode ones coming out. And I would have been roughly the. Same age as going. Oh, yeah, of course. I’m definitely like I’m gonna love this.

Speaker 2

Hmm.

Dion

But you.

Quinny

Know. Sorry, I just noticed in the chat that Missy said something about. Asking. Adults playing Minecraft is like asking if they play Lego games. I’m a 46 year old person and **** if I play some Lego games so you know it’s it’s a difficult.

Dion

Sure. One. Yeah. I mean, I don’t have any problem with people who Minecraft things. That’s great. You know, it just, I just missed it. And so now I have only the the movie from which to get all of the law and history from. And let me tell you.

Speaker

Dion

I still don’t know what the. **** Minecraft is about.

Jill

It’s just making stuff.

Quinny

No.

Jill

Out of boxes, isn’t it?

Quinny

Well, and this is what I thought, Jill that like I was like, what the **** are you like? It’s like in so many ways that a thing of saying, hey, let’s make a movie about Lego because Lego is just system of making **** out of blocks.

Jill

Hmm.

Quinny

So how do you make an entertaining movie out of Lego? Turns out, they managed to do that. And you know. **** me, but Minecraft, OK? Let. Let’s be honest though, characters plot.

Dion

Ah, you know, it’s no emoji movie.

Jill

Thank God.

Dion

It’s no pixels. Uh, yeah, that.

Quinny

One too. Thank God.

Jill

I don’t think I I don’t. Think I even watched that one.

Dion

Not.

Quinny

I just watched the trailer 3. Million times whilst working at supernova.

Dion

And and I gotta I gotta admit.

Jill

Oh.

Dion

You know for for a while there I was kind of like, oh, yeah, I’m in for this, you know, like I I jumped on board and I. Was like yeah, alright. Kind of fun, and then it lost me at one point and I don’t think it ever got me back, but it still by the.

Quinny

Well, do do you want? Do we want a synopsis? Do we wanna try and work out vaguely what this is about? OK, so the the question is, should accent.

Dion

End I was like.

Jill

Ohh sure.

Dion

Do you do you want to do? Do you need me? Do you want music? Ohh yeah you. Have to do it all in villagers.

Jill

That’s like asking you to do it in simlish.

Dion

Yes. Do you need some background music there?

Quinny

Corning. Yeah, absolutely. I’m going to do it as Jack Black.

Dion

Quinny

In in, in an effort to be as. ******* rock as possible.

Dion

Well, I’ve got your rock track for. You.

Quinny

Amazing.

Dion

If you think about rock, you’ve gotta think about Jimmy Barnes.

Quinny

I’m always thinking about raw.

Speaker 1

Make.

Quinny

What? Adolf Hitler’s book was a part, autobiography and part political treaty. Mine camps, which means my struggle promoted the key concepts of no. That’s the wrong synopsis. ******* hell. Sorry, sorry. I’m sorry, Joe. The roll of the eyes. It’s all in there. Mysterious portal pulls 4 misfit rockers into the ******* rocking overworld, A bizarre cubic Wonderland that thrives on nothing but imagination to get back home. They have to master the terrain. Whilst embarking on magical quest with an unexpected crafter known only as Steve. And that is the synopsis of Minecraft. Yeah. Good. Yeah, we go up there eventually. Sorry, I will never make the mic after again. I promise I’m there.

Speaker

Thank.

Jill

You. Yeah. Really done.

Quinny

I I know I could tell you like.

Speaker

Wait, wait, wait.

Quinny

**** man. Ohh.

Dion

All right, enough. OK. The algorithm’s going to pick it up and be like Jimmy Barnes. You can bite us anything. Yeah. No idea.

Quinny

So I mean that doesn’t really give any kind of introduction to who those four people pulled into the overworlder.

Dion

It’s Jack Black, Jason Momoa.

Jill

No, he was already there.

Quinny

He was already there. Steve was already there because he was mining.

Speaker 1

Well.

Dion

Many people you know, when you look at this is Jack Black and Jason Momoa and then some other.

Jill

Yeah. And look, those are the those two reasons are why my mother wants to go and watch this movie. You know, she doesn’t know what Minecraft is.

Speaker

MHM.

Quinny

Yeah, yeah, it’s true.

Dion

Yeah. I mean, look, it’s it’s interesting to also note that there are some other people that show up in in a Minecraft movie like Jennifer Coolidge.

Jill

Yes.

Speaker

Yeah.

Dion

Jermaine Clement. Yeah. And I’m trying to remember the. The voice of Rachel house. That’s it, the voice of.

Quinny

The the big.

Dion

No. Gosha, who has been in everything that ever that has come out of New Zealand or stuff associated with for the last 10 years.

Speaker

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Jill

Yeah, if you’re a Marvel fan, you’ll. Know her as Topaz.

Dion

Yes. Ah yes.

Quinny

That’s right. Yes, I’m I. I was actually surprisingly on board for this film for about the. 1st 20 minutes.

Jill

You disappointed as well.

Quinny

No, like I just, I just think that the 1st 20 minutes is like so it’s it’s directed by the guy who. Did Napoleon dynamite? So Jared Hess and it’s all shot in this little New Zealand Ish town. It’s meant to be Idaho, but it’s clearly New Zealand and.

Speaker

Well, that’s a.

Dion

It’s little New Zealand dish house like like town, it’s. Like it’s new.

Quinny

Yeah, and it has this kind of quirky, weird vibe like Jason Momoa’s character is is got elements of that Napoleon dynamite kind of feel of being an outsider and a bit of a dork. And the comedy. When it’s doing the Jared Hess thing really works like there’s this whole thing where they he’s going to go and try and buy a the contents of a shipping container or whatever it is like a storage container and it.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

All of that stuff worked and I’m laughing. Hot. And then when it kind of went into the actual overworld stuff. I laughed a lot less. Yeah. Yeah, it’s not that it’s necessarily bad or anything. I just didn’t find it as funny. And it started to rely much more heavily. And I realized that I didn’t know enough about Minecraft to know that like to find it all that funny. So yeah. Yeah, Jill.

Jill

Well, I found it funny because it was circumstantial like I was learning about Minecraft at the same time you were. I just kind of found the characters were able to like pull me through the stuff that I didn’t know. Like there was, you know. Stuff happening around to like describe everything that’s going on and what it all means and stuff like that. But it wasn’t it. It was kind of. Like. Show and tell you know you got to see all that kind of stuff, but I was kind of relying more on the characters and their dynamics and the storytelling that they were doing to provide the laughs. And I I did find that, like, the circumstances that they got themselves in were funny. And that’s why I was laugh.

Speaker 9

Hmm.

Quinny

Look, Tally who was sitting next to us. Oh my God.

Jill

She was laugh right the whole way through.

Quinny

She was having the best month in time, and like every character that came on screen, she was like ohh. And like there was this. But. Huge reaction. I was like I. Need to watch every movie next to.

Speaker

Yeah.

Dion

I mean, kids.

Quinny

They’re delighting.

Dion

We saw it in a very kid centric showing and they seemed to be having a really good time and maybe they had more of a connection to it than than we had. And you know I had the same sort of thing. I watched it when it was outside of that Minecraft world.

Speaker

Hmm.

Dion

I kind of got the bit weird. A bit funny sort of stuff, but when they went in there, I’m like I’m not. Sure I’m getting this.

Jill

Quinny

Hmm.

Dion

But.

Jill

They didn’t lose me because I quite enjoyed the the stuff with like the wait, it’s the overworld. But what was the dark place called?

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

There’s the nether or.

Jill

Near the world. Yeah, I liked that. There was the nether. Sorry, I liked that there was like a villain. And so that there was a storyline happening there. And, you know, there was something that they had to overcome.

Quinny

Think it’s just called the nether. Yeah.

Jill

Almond I quite liked. I like the little piggies. They’re very cute.

Speaker 2

Hmm.

Quinny

Yeah, the the yes, there are like funny piggies and the weird kind of of, like, massive ogre pigs.

Jill

Yeah, I mean learning stuff as like the characters that were new to the overworld, like, as they were learning and I think was quite helpful for people that are outside of Minecraft. So I think they were very conscious about. You know. Parents maybe taking children to see this movie and like having something for them to be entertained by. So I I could totally get on board with that. I think it. Was definitely for two different audiences can enjoy the same movie.

Quinny

Yeah.

Jill

The one thing. That, like, really kind of got me was that it’s very male centric.

Quinny

Yes.

Jill

The the male characters are like, I’m sorry to say it, but.

Speaker

Yeah.

Jill

Like they’re the. Ones doing everything. And so to have two women get pulled into the overworld as well, and they’re just kind of relegated to. Yeah, I don’t know what I’m doing and then. You know.

Quinny

Yeah, you can fight.

Jill

I don’t get to. I don’t get. Build anything because I’m just a dumb girl and then separating the two women from the the three male characters and then kind of forgetting about.

Quinny

Yeah.

Jill

Them for half. The movie, until they meet back up again, was. Yeah, very disappointing. Yeah, especially knowing that.

Quinny

Here. Yes.

Jill

My 2 nieces who are like 9 and five playing Minecraft and want to watch this movie and I’m. Like.

Dion

And speak to you.

Jill

They’re just gonna go and see boys doing stuff, and I want to see girls doing stuff.

Quinny

Too, yeah, you like now that you mentioned, I’m like, oh, yeah, the girls never actually build anything.

Jill

I think ohh. They built one mushroom house and that was it. You don’t get to see.

Quinny

Pause. Yeah.

Jill

Them build it, no.

Quinny

Yeah, it’s just suddenly there at every. Ohh wow.

Jill

Yeah. And they find and they find the wolf and they make the wolf a puppy again and like.

Quinny

They maybe craft. A sword or something? I’m not sure.

Jill

Yeah, it was all very. Basic.

Dion

No, they they pick up a spade. Yeah, yeah.

Quinny

Look, it’s like.

Jill

But it was like I’m sorry, but like this token boy that has been pulled into this world who’s like, a genius is gonna be the one that saves us all. And maybe not his sister that has become his guardian recently. Or the woman that’s been helping him like.

Dion

I mean. They kind of try and balance it by having Jason memo play an absolute moron. But I’m not sure that that does anything because he still kind of succeeds, which may be a metaphor for something, but I’m not sure. I think I think you’re quite right. Like it’s completely undercooked. Female perspective, considering that Minecraft supposed to be about something. It’s about creativity. Something for everyone. It’s. Yeah, to do to sort of do that now I have a clip here. Should we just go and watch a little bit of a clip with this one and then we’ll come back and we’ll discuss. So this is about. The first time that they meet villagers.

Quinny

Ah, ah.

Speaker 3

Here it is mid port village.

Speaker 1

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Who are these guys?

Speaker 5

Ohh, these dudes. They’re the villagers, the total pacifists and vegetarians. You don’t bug them, they won’t bug you. They just like to chill, trade and eat **** loads of bread. They love crushing a loaf.

Speaker 4

So they built all this.

Speaker 5

Yeah, most of it. But the good stuff, you see, that’s all.

Speaker 3

Steve, anything you can dream about here, you can. Make.

Speaker 5

Zero limits. Relax. It’s just an iron goal of local security force. But there are a bunch of big softies. Unless you start messing with the villagers.

Speaker 3

Don’t ever do.

Speaker

That this place makes no sense.

Speaker 5

Come with me.

Dion

Yes, of course. The place makes absolutely no sense. Don’t mess with the villagers.

Speaker 5

That’s no.

Quinny

No, I will give a little bit of a A. I don’t know. Shout out whatever. Like I enjoyed Jack Black’s a couple of songs, you know, they were fun the. They’re him doing his thing. Do you see if you’re on board with him doing his thing, it’s all good. Yes. Songs. That’s right. There are couple of.

Dion

Did you really feel like that? That worked though, because I have to say is probably the weakest part of it because at one point I remember we all kind of just went when he started singing like ohh ****. Is this a musical? And then it wasn’t a musical. And then it’s just like a couple of weird songs that are shown in there for no real reason. And it’s just because.

Jill

But yeah, I feel. Like they hung their whole hat on. We want Jack Black because he can do.

Quinny

This yes, 100%.

Jill

Because he’s like character actor Jack Black and also musically adept. Yeah. Yeah. Like it’s like he he kids love him. He was Bowser, you know, like they they want that relatability.

Speaker

Hmm.

Quinny

Absolute.

Jill

He’s someone that he’s someone that kids know, especially after doing like ******* free Jumanji movies and Super Mario. Yeah, exactly.

Quinny

He’s. Yeah, like he is, like he’s Kung Fu panda. He is.

Jill

Yeah, exactly. Very kid friendly.

Quinny

Safe, funny. Like, you know, he’s totally fine with looking goofy. So yeah, he’s the safest, bankable person. Because I I look at it and I think I don’t know who else you. Would. Put in that role. Like somebody who has that kind of. Of. Manic energy.

Jill

Yeah.

Quinny

But still feels like, yeah, he will be your fun uncle. Who will? You know, occasionally sings some crazy songs and then you.

Speaker

Hmm.

Dion

Know he was a.

Quinny

He was a he’ll show you.

Dion

How to do something cool? He was the kid that Bruce Willis shot in day of the Jackal. Yeah, Jack Black’s been a lot of stuff. He’s. Been around for quite a while.

Quinny

Yeah, I know. He he was the bully in the never ending Story 3. What useless information for? You.

Speaker 3

Thank you.

Dion

Look, you know. All in all, I have to admit in in a certain way I enjoyed a Minecraft movie way more than I’ve thought. I would enjoy a Minecraft movie and I can’t actually hate the fact that it’s doing OK and it is doing bank at the box.

Jill

Yeah, me too. Me too.

Dion

Office it’s a.

Quinny

Doing math.

Dion

It is doing very and I’ve got to say, as an adaptation of a game which are always fraught with peril, it’s not terrible.

Jill

Look, I ripped **** out of the Super Mario movie because for me it was a 2 hour. Commercial. This, however, felt more of there’s a story happening. Yeah, it about a game rather than advertorial.

Quinny

Yeah, I mean. This is ohh.

Dion

You go. I was just gonna say like, you’re right. Jill’s 100% right. Because also the point of Minecraft as a game is just to build whatever the **** you want. And it just throws complications at you, I guess because like, you know, with creepers that come out and then do things and you have to kind of deal with consequences and stuff, but there’s no narrative like Super Mario is you have to wreck your Princess Peach.

Jill

Yeah, yeah, it’s pretty homework.

Speaker

Yeah.

Dion

You know.

Quinny

Yeah. Yeah. Over.

Dion

In Minecraft, they’re just like, hey, this entire world. Do whatever you want. So.

Jill

Yeah. And I think that lends itself well to being adaptable to a movie because you can literally do whatever. ****. You want, yes.

Quinny

Yeah, yeah. And it it it, it has that same difficulty in in much the same way that the D&D movie did, where it’s like you can have anything you can go anywhere, do anything. So what are you, what what’s the the thing that you’re trying to get to? So you have to create your Mcguffin which is glowing block of something. And yeah, like, let me see you saying fight the Ender Dragon. I didn’t say the Ender. Dragon, but the sky beam.

Dion

Don’t worry it it ticks all the boxes of any sort of narrative that every executive has asked for. It’s like.

Jill

Underground Fight Club.

Quinny

Underground Fight Club.

Jill

They’ve been mcguffin.

Dion

McGovern. Yeah. Weird **** knows creatures that only? Yeah, only talking. Ohh.

Quinny

Noise. I mean, that was that was an interesting choice too. Like the whole thing of going OK, we’re going to also throw some of this, the the Minecraft stuff into. The real world.

Dion

You know, but that was just lovely. Weird.

Speaker

Yeah.

Quinny

And that that’s when when I did enjoy the film the most was when it was leaning into it’s weird. And and I think that’s when Jared Hess is doing his thing the most is when it’s like, yeah, let’s make the villager with a weird blocky **** nose have. A date with Stifler’s mum and. And make that really ******* weird and make the other teachers at the school really ******* weird. Yeah, and, you know, let’s let’s really lean in on the weird. And even when they’re eating like chicken that’s been cooked by the lava, make that kind of weird too, like. And also yeah, bring in some tater tots and some waffles.

Jill

Yes. Oh, my God. Tina was in this movie.

Quinny

Yeah. Gosh, Tina, yes.

Jill

Can you come good job freaking dinner?

Dion

It is. It’s quite it’s a good way of selling it, actually. He’s like, hey, the guy who made Napoleon Dynamite made a mini. Graph movie. So he’s going to put in references galore. But no good.

Jill

And no, John Greece playing football.

Speaker

No.

Dion

But also, apparently something that is is thrilled, fans around the world, a chicken jockey I don’t even know what that is, but you know, hey.

Quinny

Yep.

Dion

Kids are getting involved. Why not?

Quinny

Something that was quite nice that I only looked up and and found out a little bit more about later was that.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

At one point, they point to a pig with a with a hat and a with a crown.

Jill

Oh yeah, yeah.

Quinny

And they they referenced the and they say the name of the character and I’m going to, I’m going to ask the chat to remind me but the the pig with the crown was a symbol of the minecrafter a very popular minecrafter on YouTube who died. Yeah. And was like.

Jill

Ah.

Quinny

The that pointed to him is that pig a king, you know? No, he’s a legend. And it’s like, ohh, that’s actually quite. Nice. You know, so there’s a lot in there for people who, if you know your Minecraft stuff. Yeah, that’s a techno blade. That’s. The one.

Jill

Not very good.

Quinny

Yeah. You know, if you know your Minecraft law, there’s a heap of stuff in there. You know, there’s, I was kind of looking forward to seeing end of man. Because that’s one of the things that I’m vaguely aware of in the game that you know, enderman is this thing that shows up.

Jill

Yeah.

Quinny

And it’s creepy. As peers and turns out creepy as peers.

Jill

Yeah, it was good.

Quinny

Yeah. So I think if you know your your Minecraft stuff, you’ll probably get a lot out of.

Speaker

Yes.

Quinny

I had less fun with it in the bits that weren’t Jared Hess. Weird, so yeah.

Dion

Look, it made it made $300 million on 100 and. $50 million. My opinion doesn’t matter.

Jill

Amazing.

Dion

At all. It’s going Minecraft too is written. It’s happening, it’s just it just has to. They will not not do that now.

Quinny

No.

Dion

With the amount of money, it’s. Made. So hey, it’s a profit. It’s profitable. It’s not terrible. If you want to go see it, go for it. Should. Should we give it a rating?

Jill

It’s not, no.

Dion

Should we do a rating before we come back?

Quinny

Yeah, yeah.

Dion

Absolutely. I mean, I just also have just make that like if anyone seen the studio, yeah, it’s it feels very much like the kool-aid movie. Which is a joke. It’s. A joke for people who’ve seen the studio. Come on. You gotta get on to that. Very funny.

Jill

Oh, yes. Yeah. OK yeah. So yeah.

Dion

Yeah, look, and I’ll, I’ll go first for this one it to me not knowing anything about it and still having a good enough time, I’m going to give it like 7. 70 out of 100 because it was fun enough, you know it wasn’t for me, but also it wasn’t not for me because it tried to include me somehow. And I like a bit of weird so. Yeah, I’m gonna give it 70 a Minecraft movie. Not ******* terrible. Not soulless.

Jill

I’m going to give it an 8.

Dion

You don’t mean that much.

Jill

I I had a. Good. Time not every movie has to be high art. I thought, you know, it was very enjoyable. I laughed. I liked the ending. And you know what? If you’ve got kids or nephews and nieces that want to go and see it, I’d recommend going with them. It was fun.

Speaker

Hmm.

Jill

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Dion

Go for it or do do the 2001 space Odyssey bit and maybe just take some shrooms as you sit down and then when they kick in, as you’re like, halfway through, you’ll be like.

Speaker

Right.

Dion

Oh no as.

Jill

Long as you don’t have to be responsible for. The children that you took then. Ohh great.

Quinny

What? What children? And I didn’t take them. I chopped them up, and then I snorted them is. That what you ohh.

Jill

Oh God, Uncle Dion and Uncle Quinny are band.

Dion

Yeah, yeah, I found some kids in the lobby.

Jill

No.

Quinny

And I keep them and take them home with me. Yeah, no. Yeah, right. Yeah. Look, I’m kind of with you, Dee. I I think I’d kick it around 70, like, before our conversation, I probably would have been closer to the 60 mark. The more we’ve talked about it, the more I’m like, actually, it wasn’t offensive. It was fun. And it was.

Speaker 2

Mm-hmm.

Quinny

You know. It ticked along. Yeah. And I’ve had an awful lot of people as soon as we posted something about saying, hey, we went to Minecraft like ****, ton of parents going. Ohh God tell me it’s not awful. So many people asking is it awful? Is it am I going to hate it? And no, no, you’re not. There’s a lot of funny. Stuff in there and.

Dion

I mean, yeah, there’s weird bits for the adults. And then the kid bits are kind of like, here’s a bunch of references. And then there is just flashing lights and sound until the the movie. You know, that’s what. You want from.

Quinny

Screening screenings of it have apparently resulted in children giving like standing ovations like this is playing to kids big time and, you know, even in our screening, there were kids running around and stuff and they stopped. They stopped and they watched that.

Speaker

Wow.

Quinny

Movie and then had a great time. So you know what? Yeah. Take your kids. I think it’s a it’s a winner for kids and adults you won’t hate.

Dion

It it’s better than the Warcraft movie.

Quinny

The funny thing is, it felt really similar, you know.

Dion

A little. Bit.

Quinny

Like there’s there’s a a big portal and there’s some bad guys on one side of the portal, and then there’s the big shirt, bright, shiny world on the other. Side of the portal. Yeah. And right, people with beards and long hair.

Dion

OK, there now we’ve done the Minecraft movie I. Think it’s time?

Speaker 3

It’s time. It’s time to get ourselves as a bit of a rusty voice on.

Speaker 9

That’s all you gotta.

Jill

Get now what’s the job, Dion?

Speaker 9

You’re joking. What’s the job?

Dion

What’s the? What’s the job? Let’s go. Let’s. Go see the the. The Cool 1 of this, if we’re not doing ** **** noses in this one, but maybe it. Might be alright.

Speaker

Oh.

Speaker 9

So listen, today’s going to be hard. Let’s all go home with the same. Our fingers that we came with just count.

Speaker

It.

Speaker 9

When my wife passed and I left the role maureens a lot of people were giving up on me. You gave me a job. You were patient with me. You Carla. Jenny, you’re my family.

Speaker

Can you?

Speaker 9

Excuse me, it’s not your business.

Speaker

Oh good boss.

Speaker 9

Was that some military ship? You didn’t see anything?

Jill

Just give my back if.

Speaker

I ever need it stop. Jenny’s missing.

Jill

She went out with her friends on.

Speaker

Friday.

Speaker 1

It is.

Speaker

The police don’t have the resources to work these cases. They take a report and forget. About it.

Speaker 9

Please find our daughter. Where’s the girl?

Speaker

You cop.

Speaker 9

You wish I was a cop. So these guys are next level.

Speaker 1

We were.

Speaker

Look at those Brits. You ain’t a.

Speaker 9

Cop. You’re working, man. That’s right. Let’s play. This isn’t just some kidnapping. This is you have a traffic. Remember gunny?

Speaker

Blind ward, buddy. That doesn’t know he’s blind.

Speaker 9

That’s the one. He shot a foot to the left. I’ll. Be dead.

Speaker 4

I wanted you dead. You’d be dead. I will be your whip in Somalia for this evening. This is the real beast here and 14 pulled direct from Saddam’s palace and I added a Bluetooth scope.

Speaker 9

Where was she?

Speaker

There’s a special place, high rollers. Only they can do anything as long.

Speaker 2

As they pay, there’s.

Speaker

The.

Speaker 9

Gangs, the mob, corrupt government officials, they’re all involved in human trafficking. You’re on the payroll too.

Speaker 4

He killed you into this. You have to kill your way out of it.

Speaker 9

Food as much.

Speaker 4

All of this is for a girl.

Speaker 9

I’m not stopping until I bring her. Home. That woman looks my wife. That’s for slapping that woman. That’s for slapping your wife.

Speaker

Who are you?

Speaker 9

What are you?

Dion

Ohh God, that’s the working mate.

Speaker 9

He’s just, he’s just, he’s just a working man.

Dion

And. Ohh Jason stays.

Quinny

So I just read predicting he’s saying I’m he’s not gonna stop till he’s playing all the village people. Just a dancing. I’m just an Indian chief.

Speaker

Good.

Dion

Oh. Got myself in a spot of bother with that one. OK, that’s that’s called cultural appropriation. Yes. Canceled, man. OK.

Speaker

OK so.

Jill

I I I have. Too many bows to be with this. Movie.

Dion

Right, to be fair, like when I saw this was coming out, it’s like, oh, Jason Straight. Yeah, kind of went.

Speaker

Oh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Dion

You know. Looked at all.

Jill

Like, oh, I got the I got the invitation to the premiere. And I’m like, yeah, **** it. Let’s go watch. This Jason Statham movie.

Dion

And I’m just gonna say that trailer sells the movie as a better thing than what it actually is. Ohh boy. Because I watched the trailer again and I was watching it and I was like, oh, yeah? And then I remember back to the movie and I’m like, ohh no. Like, this is not very fun at all. But what would you expect?

Jill

Hey.

Speaker

Oh yeah. Jesus. Yes.

Jill

Yeah.

Dion

From a movie that was written. By not only the director David Ayer, but also Oh no screenplay by Sylvester Stallone. Yes, yes.

Jill

Yes.

Speaker

Ah.

Dion

Oh, no. Yeah, no, no. Known for his dialogue.

Speaker 2

Oh. So that’s just the wording.

Quinny

Oh.

Jill

Yes, very literate film.

Quinny

I’ve been looking bit yeah.

Dion

Yeah, a little bit.

Jill

I need to I need to preface my review with saying that I’m not particularly a fan of Jason Statham. I tend to avoid his movies because they. Dribble, however, I have enjoyed spy. Which was a comedy and I did enjoy that other one with Hugh Grant in it. That was also a comedy. I think he can do action comedy quite well.

Quinny

Right. Yes.

Jill

But when it’s just strike action.

Speaker

Yeah.

Jill

That’s where he kind of falls flat because the scripts are never good and his dialogue. Is never good.

Quinny

Back in the day when he was doing the transporter, I was like he was. He was a fun action star. And so you were like ohh this is a bit different this is. Bit, you know, unusual, but then.

Speaker

Ah.

Jill

What was the Hobbs and? Shaw, like in the Fast and Furious.

Quinny

I couldn’t whip that. Yeah.

Dion

Yeah. Like he’s like for me, you know, like.

Jill

Because I’d imagine that’s still a little bit like action comedy.

Dion

Yeah, it is. He’s playing against the rock and they hate each other and they have to work together and they don’t like. That. So it’s kind of fun, yeah. You know.

Jill

Although. I did kind of like the beekeeper. Which was easy one.

Quinny

I was gonna say cause that was the. Last one, wasn’t it? That was the last.

Speaker

Yeah. And I mean it’s.

Jill

The same thing. It’s like he’s an ex, like, you know, whatever special OPS guy who becomes an assassin. I mean, that’s just his whole MO. I just disappointed that these aren’t a continuation of the same character because I would love to see him go between odd job to odd job. Being the same guy.

Quinny

No, that’s that’s when he’s in. He’s in the Bond franchise.

Jill

You know what? The bomb.

Dion

Yeah, indeed in.

Quinny

Franchise. It was a it was an odd job joke. I’m sorry. Ohh OK.

Dion

That’s not even funny.

Jill

We’re yeah, we’re banning you from jokes.

Quinny

So I came up short on that one.

Jill

Yeah. I mean, if he was. The same guy from the beekeeper, but like just now with a new.

Dion

Job. Because. Sure, yeah. Yeah, cause he.

Jill

Well, the beehives got destroyed in the last one.

Dion

To be.

Jill

So now you’ve gotta find a.

Dion

New job. If I mean do we do we really need it’s it’s an option for this?

Quinny

Like, I mean, I could. I could do it with his accent. It’s all. It’s all I have to, cuz I didn’t go and see the film with these guys because I was busy that night. So the only thing I have to provide to this.

Dion

No.

Quinny

Is a **** accent. Reading a shift synopses alright. Ohh

Jill

Go on, then. Queen, give us a. **** accent, right?

Dion

John, let me let wait. Let me get the music back again, because he’s just a working class man.

Speaker 9

Get nice and close. Yeah, boy, my all of you. Shopping.

Quinny

Leave on Cade left behind. That’s his name.

Jill

That is, I didn’t. I didn’t know the cat.

Quinny

Leave on.

Jill

Leave on kind. Just the working man working me.

Quinny

Wash it off level and build a. V1 yeah. Just give me two manly sounding names. And smashing them. Leave on Kay left behind a decorated military career in Black Ops to live a simple life of working. However, whenever human traffickers kidnap his boss’s daughter, he searched to bring her home and covers a world of corruption far greater than he could have ever imagined. Also, he has ammo.

Jill

He has a sledgehammer and he never ******* uses it.

Quinny

OK, this is much better this. Makes.

Dion

Is one of my main points that that that, that I I’m so angry about.

Jill

Yeah, Deon called it Chekhov. Sledgehammer.

Dion

It was. It’s literally like it’s in the ******* poster and you’re waiting for him to beat the **** out of people with a sledgehammer, and he uses it to do what? To break some handcuffs, and then he doesn’t use it anymore. And you’re like, are you ******* kidding me? Like this was built for you. It’s there, but like.

Speaker

Yeah. So.

Dion

Let’s be honest, a lot of decisions made in this film were really ******* weird, really.

Jill

Ah dear yes.

Dion

Yep.

Jill

And unfortunately, it’s a very long movie for a. Lot of weird this.

Dion

Yeah, it is. It is.

Quinny

I was expecting this to be like a 90 minute in and you know running gun. Kind of.

Jill

Ohh you wish.

Dion

Thing two hours or just under 2 hours, you know.

Jill

Oh, I just want to at the start of this movie. OK, so he is ex British military, but he’s now working in Chicago. And so I was like.

Dion

Yep.

Jill

I wonder if he’s going to have an accent.

Speaker

You’re.

Jill

And I think he was at the beginning trying to do an accent. But then after about 10 minutes, it’s gone.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

Yes, I haven’t used by the concept of him trying.

Dion

And they sort of.

Quinny

To do an accent.

Dion

And then.

Jill

Yeah, because it was something a bit off when he’s, like, giving a speech to the work crew on the construction site. Before the start of the day, you know, and I’m like.

Dion

Yeah, like I mean, I just like it eventually just gives it gives. Yeah. Just an ex British soldier who did some work for American soldiers. And we were doing stuff in the Gulf War. No, no, not Gulf War. Just. Some sort of war in a desert somewhere that had to do with oil, which is explained in just the the credit sequence. But we’re not going to explain what or how that he suddenly has a green card and is working in a in a. But maybe he married an American woman and had a child, and that’s why he’s here. But he’s also very poor.

Jill

Yeah, he did. That was, that was the thing, you know, he was he was fighting for custody of his daughter, who is living with the grandfather. And the grandfather is a rich fellow that has a very eccentric taste in clothing in.

Quinny

All right.

Dion

Yeah.

Speaker

Of what?

Jill

Furnishings and parties.

Dion

I gotta I have to say because you bank like they banked everything on Jason Statham and he has just like, he’s just purported as regular kind of person. Yeah, almost every single other character in this is a maniacally dressed, deeply scenery eating person that makes choices. Completely off the off, the sort of Richter in a way that you’re like. It’s kind of like ALDI brand John W.

Jill

You know it’s Teemu, John Wick.

Dion

It’s. Yeah, it’s kind of Teemu, John Wick, because all the all the villain ish characters are the the the crazy ones have just weird decisions.

Quinny

Oh God.

Jill

Yeah. There was so many different gangs and clicks in this movie that it was really starting to get. Hard to follow. So First off, it’s like I’m gonna say a Mexican drug cartel that are roughing up somebody on his.

Dion

The tracksuit wearing. Oh yeah, yeah.

Jill

Right. That he deals then.

Speaker

Yeah.

Dion

With a pickaxe and not a sledgehammer that that that annoyed me.

Quinny

Yeah. Oh.

Jill

Then there are Russian mobsters.

Dion

In track suits.

Jill

Then then there are bikies and then there are also redneck bikies.

Dion

Of course. Yes. And the and the the funny bikies are the ones that do. What is this kind of like that’s not steampunk? This is Steam punk bikies. Cause remember they had like Viking horn helmets and **** and all.

Jill

Yeah. And this guy was, like, obsessed with Game of Thrones and had an Iron throne. But it was all exhaust pipes, and he wore, like, really, **** kind of Leathers.

Quinny

That looks.

Speaker 1

Thank you.

Dion

This this sounds fun, doesn’t it? But no, it’s not fun. This is probably this was.

Jill

But also like the father-in-law who is rich, so therefore he wears patterned tracksuits and fur bucket hats and has Alice in Wonderland themed parties. For his granddaughter.

Dion

Who also the granddaughter is not in costume. Everyone else is in costume and they’re having an Alice Alice in Wonderland themed party just to.

Jill

A group of adults having a birthday party for a 8 year old child.

Dion

Yeah, all dressed up in this stuff. And what is the 8 year old child wearing normal clothes not having a bar? Of it doesn’t really like it at all.

Jill

You’re like, yeah, this is an 8 year old. Child that looks. 20 like she’s seen it all. It’s just. Like she’s not a cute little girl. She’s a she’s a wise and little.

Speaker

Girl.

Dion

The whole. Whole premise of this thing is, is that Jason, like what’s his name? Sorry. He just read his name out the character.

Quinny

Name leave. Leave on. Leave it out.

Speaker 9

Leave, leave.

Dion

Leave work working for this really nice family owned construction company and their daughter who’s really nice and kind of like, you know, daughter to him, kind of, you know, being really nice. She goes missing because she’s been abducted by like.

Jill

The Russian mob.

Dion

The the Russian mob who were servicing. It’s not people smuggling, it’s.

Jill

Ohh no, it was like really weird. They were having like weird. Casino parties in Buck ***** Swamp. Nowhere. Yeah, for like rich people that would go to these like outhouses. Yeah. To. Play illegal gambling. And partake in drugs and they’re all dressed up like the Penguin, and partaking.

Dion

For some reason.

Quinny

Hang on, which which version?

Jill

The Danny DeVito version and and like.

Dion

And.

Quinny

OK, right.

Jill

Partaking in in stolen. Women, I don’t know. It’s ******* weird.

Dion

Yeah. Yeah, it’s, it’s, it’s, it’s human trafficking. Like, is the thing they’ve they’ve abducted the daughter.

Jill

But there’s only one girl that’s human trafficked. Yeah, there’s there are no other human trafficked people. Just this one girl.

Dion

They’ve got this one daughter. Because they do this for rich clientele, which, you know seems weird because they don’t look particularly rich.

Jill

Oh yeah, the whole thing is like ohh, they go out to clubs and they like take photos of everybody there and they send it to their clients and they like, pick the girl you want. And then we’ll abduct her. Like that’s how it.

Speaker 4

For you, yeah.

Quinny

Works. I was gonna say that I’m pretty sure that’s not how.

Dion

Human trafficking works, then and then the, and then the police do nothing because like ohh no, this happens all the time. We can’t help you. And she, she disappeared. Sorry.

Jill

Yes it is.

Speaker 2

I mean.

Jill

They’re like, oh, too hard. Yeah. Ohh. But then it does turn out that the cops are on the take. So that’s why. They’re putting in the too hard part.

Dion

Yeah, but not even the cops that were investigating it. Just the regular cops that are out near the place that are getting paid. It’s so dumb.

Jill

Yes, it’s such. Oh my God.

Dion

So dumb.

Jill

And it goes on at least 45. Minutes too long.

Dion

I would like I would like to say that it would be more entertaining if the fight scenes were actually entertaining. Right.

Jill

They were very.

Dion

Paint by numbers.

Jill

Darkly lit, hard to see camera moving too fast.

Dion

Jason Statham’s doing quite a good job. The the worst part was the motorcycle chase, which was 100% him on a green screen because every single shot of his face cropped out. Everything about the riding and yet he’s supposed to be like riding to the forest and stuff.

Jill

Oh yes, it was ambiguous backgrounds.

Dion

Yeah, that’s what I think it was. Fight, Chase and my other, like personal noises at the end when he goes into. Like kill everyone in the casino to rescue the girl who keeps getting moved 93 times and almost killed five times. Cause whatever he goes in there with like a semi automatic single shot rifle and everyone else has like fully automatic weapons and you know. Oh yeah, don’t forget the two Russian crazies. Who turn up halfway through and they’re like psychopaths. And they’re dressed like Balenciaga models.

Speaker

Ohh yeah.

Dion

It’s so weird with the thing, but Jason, you know Jason.

Quinny

Is so confused by what’s happening in this film.

Speaker

Just.

Dion

Just trying to recount this, this is what I’m saying. It was a screenplay written by Sylvester Stallone. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s just looking.

Jill

It’s very confusing movie. There was literally too much happening.

Dion

I feel like he just he was sitting in a room surrounded by posters of movies he’d been in and he was just picking ideas from what the posters look like and throwing them into this thing. And then.

Jill

Yeah, you had. Three games in this thing, you really only needed to. Have one.

Quinny

Right.

Jill

Yeah, there was the Russians that were doing the human trafficking, but then there was the one guy that was actually doing the human trafficking because the Russians weren’t into it. And then there was the guys that were doing the drug running and the gun running that were also taking part in the human trafficking.

Dion

Yeah. And and there was dimmi.

Jill

Yeah, Dimmi Dimmi was the Russian that was doing the human trafficking, but his father didn’t want him to do it.

Dion

Demi. Because it was dirty. Who was zava from? Yeah, lesser. Ohh, but also wearing outlandish clothing that is just like what the **** is this? He looked like. Do you remember Jason Momoa in a Minecraft movie? It’s that kind of flair. It’s like a.

Jill

Yeah, they were wearing like.

Dion

Just stupid answers.

Jill

Rotate Adidas track suits is great.

Dion

It’s.

Quinny

Like amazing. And yes, I do remember that.

Jill

Yeah. And so many bucket hats.

Dion

What is working?

Jill

Fur bucket hats, matching bucket hats. Like yeah, it was. Weird.

Dion

A couple of.

Jill

Oh, and then yeah, and then they tried to kill the grandfather because they were tracing. The daughter? Yeah, it was.

Dion

That’s right. I don’t know. They’re trying to.

Jill

Weird. Oh, and then they sent the daughter to go and live with David Harbour in the forest.

Dion

Yeah, yeah, yeah. David Harvey show. You know, he shows up. He shows up as a blind ex mate of Jason Statham. Who who is still really deadly and married to some Native American woman that’s there. So.

Quinny

The pub is in this. Alright, OK.

Jill

Yeah, they just live in the forest, but he’s got a **** ton of guns.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

Cool.

Dion

Meanwhile, no one. Ever attacks him and he never kills. Anyone. Yeah, but he’s got them.

Jill

Yes.

Quinny

He’s just a ******.

Jill

Oh, and they’re all off the book guns.

Quinny

Good, very important, hugely important.

Jill

Military grade off the book weaponry.

Dion

Yeah, it’s important to to stipulate that, which means that you’re definitely playing to the audience of people who like, don’t take.

Jill

Yeah.

Dion

My guns.

Quinny

I was gonna say. Is so the the question I have is. The what was that stupid thing with Jim Caviezel? The the about human trafficking? The everybody was like it was.

Dion

Ohh that’s stupid one yeah.

Quinny

Sound of Thunder or something, or the sound of sound of freedom or.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

Whatever the **** it was.

Dion

Yeah.

Jill

Ohh, the propaganda movie.

Quinny

Yeah. Is this like that, Jason, is this adjacent?

Speaker

It could be a.

Dion

A working man is to that as the beekeeper was to people who keep bees. It’s not.

Jill

You know, I mean, yeah, it could. This could be. If you squint, it could be propaganda because it was all like, you know, a working class man taking care of like the bad people of the world.

Speaker

Right.

Quinny

Is he? Is he the good guy?

Dion

With a gun? Yeah, quite literally. That’s how they purport it, because the police won’t do anything and it’s a little bit taken because he’s because they’re like you used to be in the military. Can’t you do anything? It’s like, no, I can’t. Because I’ve gotta look out for my own family. But I’ve gotta do it because, you know, I have to.

Jill

Yeah.

Speaker 9

Got.

Dion

You know, I’ll. I’ll get it back. I’ll use these skills that I have to track down someone. It’s like, wait, you’re literally a construction site manager after you got out of the military and now you’re going to hunt people for sport? Do you not think you could make a lot more money, which is what you? Kind of need to get your daughter who’s there.

Jill

Yeah, literally be a mercenary.

Dion

Yeah. Yeah. You, you you were doing a lot of mercenary ****, which should be paying quite well.

Jill

And you’re doing it for free.

Quinny

But you know, it kills me soul. I’d much rather hit things with a hammer.

Dion

He doesn’t hit anything with a ******* hammer. That’s the problem. I wanted him to hit. I wanted him to have a fight scene with a sledgehammer, you know?

Jill

You have this great device though that like it was a video camera on his gun, so he didn’t even need. To look at anything. Just kind of like stuck it over his. Head behind a. Wall and was just shooting people and like taking them out.

Dion

And looked at it on your smartphone.

Jill

Yeah, he’s like uh, point this way. And then it’s like then it’s like, oh, now wait. Ohh this way. Yeah.

Quinny

This is amazing. Yeah.

Dion

Yeah.

Quinny

So he’s he’s he’s also using the technology to his advantage. He’s a smart, smart.

Jill

Yeah. And then he left the gun. He killed everybody.

Speaker 4

Yeah.

Jill

And then he left the gun behind.

Dion

Is that what he’s like? Good.

Quinny

Right. So.

Dion

I mean, to be honest, there was a couple of smart things in the movie where you’re like, how has no one discovered this guy and they were kind of like, yeah, they’re supposed to. Be. Really organised crime? Who have had the same kind of surveillance level thing and like, at least they did that, which was like, hey, there’s someone watching us in that cabin. Ohh, it’s that ******* guy. Quick call everyone and and send them to ambush him. And he’s like, oh, ****. They found me surveilling them because they’ve got surveillance on their own place to stop people from looking at them. OK, that makes sense.

Jill

You don’t know.

Quinny

Do you? Do you feel like this movie was really giving? Sylvester Stallone’s voice. Like, do you feel like this is the the the right vehicle for Sylvester Stallone to tell these? Kind of stories.

Jill

I mean, just sometimes gonna watch them?

Dion

I could feel Sylvester in every scene of this film.

Quinny

That’s what I wanted to hear.

Dion

Not that I want to feel Sylvester in any sense.

Jill

Unfortunately, there is an audience for these movies.

Dion

There is.

Quinny

I mean, there are the people who watched all. Of The Expendables. You know.

Jill

Yeah. And they will watch this movie.

Quinny

Yeah, if you get, if you got all the way to expand affordable then.

Speaker

I mean.

Quinny

This is probably the movie for you, I guess.

Dion

I mean, David Ayer isn’t bad is isn’t a bad director at some at some points, but I feel like this was this is very much a kind.

Jill

Used. Some good babies.

Dion

Of like well. This is one they asked me to do and I’ll just ship it out and no problem. That’s kind of felt like that. It’s like this might be the studio one that he has to do. Which is, you know, like, oh, we need you to do this because you’ve agreed to make this kind of film. It’s like, sure, whatever. I’ll just ******* get it done because there’s not a lot. Of thinking along the lines of. Like, I mean, there’s no real camera work. You know, you could see in birds of prey and other, like other movies that he’s he’s done where he thinks he’s sorry, Suicide Squad or even.

Quinny

He’s Suicide Squad, not burden break. Suicide. But to pray. Was the good.

Dion

One yes. Yeah. I mean, I’m just having a look at some of these other ones. Like, I mean, SWAT was hilarious. End of watch was good, you know, sabotage was pretty good. Fury was was good. But like some of the rest of them, I’m like, oh, yeah. Right. OK. It’s a bit. Weird. Anyway, I feel like this one is just kind of shout out for some reason and. Everyone involved, it was just happy for it to be done.

Jill

Yeah, unfortunately, the last 30 minutes, we’re like, can we go home when? When is this gonna end? Because we knew it was like it was. This was the last act. Like, this is the crescendo. It’s all gonna go down, but it literally took half an hour to.

Quinny

Right.

Jill

Get through it.

Dion

And it was dull. It was a dull finale.

Jill

It was a. Boring final shootout.

Dion

Yeah, mainly. Also it suffered at a point because there were so many evil people. There was no one bad guy. Right, that he had to get.

Jill

Ohh there was like a really bad line as well. Yeah, like the Penguin guy was. Like what are you doing here? And then he gets like. Shotgun blasted across the room. It was so bad.

Dion

Yeah, it wasn’t. See that. Was the point. It wasn’t a shotgun, it was that same ******* rifle. But it manages to be able to propel people 9 feet through the air. When shot and it’s like.

Quinny

You. Now what it is, it’s the power of Statham. He’s just thinking.

Jill

The parrot.

Dion

And I feel I feel like that’s been the last like, couple months, like Hobson, show was funny because it was. It’s a bit of a comedy, whereas the last couple, like beekeeper and this one this straight action.

Jill

I think he originally shines in an action comedy.

Dion

Yeah, be a bit funny.

Jill

Yeah. OK. So.

Dion

I gotta say there was the, you know, there was some someone mentioned that weird one where he was a fake James Bond kind of thing earlier. Rude of rude or something or other I can’t remember.

Jill

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Operation fortune. I liked that one. I thought he was good in that.

Dion

Yeah, right. And I don’t think. I’ve ever finished watching it.

Quinny

Which is the better film? Yeah, the working man or the beekeeper?

Jill

I think beekeeper and I’ve seen both.

Quinny

Like both the same director like I mean.

Jill

Yeah, which is weird, but I I think I did like beekeeper a bit better. I think the action was a bit better. It was a bit more concise in storytelling as well. Was it as convoluted?

Dion

But do you? Do you want to? Do you wanna eat the **** sandwich or the vomit milkshake?

Jill

On the milkshake, please.

Dion

Yeah. I can’t. I can’t advertise for either.

Jill

As long as it’s is it my vomit or is it someone? Else’s vomit. Ohh.

Quinny

Oh.

Speaker

Oh.

Quinny

No, I’m not into that.

Dion

No thanks.

Jill

Do you want any shoot or? Someone else’s ship?

Dion

Why would these are not high concepts? I I’m sorry I introduced them. I’m sorry, I’ve I’ve.

Quinny

Would you like us to answer these questions? Feel free to send in an e-mail to any point in going ask us anything and we’ll answer.

Dion

I would love.

Speaker

To.

Jill

Do a whole show about it, yeah.

Dion

I’m gonna. I’m gonna mayor. Cover my way. ******* back out of that. I’m sorry I introduced that to the thing, but also I did not know that this was where the podcast was.

Quinny

Gonna go tonight so you know, everybody knew that. Thank you, Casper. I. Yes, you did ask it earlier. I I. Just thought I would you. Voice it right. You know. You know, audible way.

Dion

Look. I don’t think we even need to go this quick on this. No, I was just going to say my my my rating is 30.

Quinny

Did you actually put ratings?

Jill

Not yet. I don’t think I can.

Dion

A working man did not work for me and out of the two a Minecraft movie and a working man, I can recommend go see a Minecraft movie. You might laugh in this one. You just be like, what the **** is going on?

Speaker

Yeah.

Jill

Yeah, I think I’m gonna have to rate it. Pretty low. Ohh hmm. I was like. Oh, I don’t know. It was on both the parts of it, but then it was just getting way too complicated. The and then the ending. I just wanted to leave. So it’s never a good sign when I want to leave.

Dion

Yeah, yeah.

Jill

I’ll. Give it 25.

Speaker

Oh.

Dion

The funniest, the funniest stuff was all was us taking the **** out. Of it. But going oh, look out. He’s got that now.

Jill

Yes. What’s the job? Ohh alright, let’s get him.

Speaker 2

Yes, you’re secure.

Dion

Kimball. Then I’d better go see my friend. He’s got guns.

Quinny

If you kinda.

Dion

Wanna RIP the **** out of it? Yeah, go for.

Speaker

Wow.

Quinny

OK, I’m feeling. Pretty good about not managing to make that screening.

Dion

If a person enjoyed Craven, would they enjoy a working man having not seen Craven?

Jill

Yeah, sorry I haven’t even.

Quinny

Ohh, I have watched Craven.

Jill

Seen this?

Quinny

The thing is that Yorick, you have ******* atrocious taste in movies. I’ve I have looked at the stuff that you like and I’m like, what the ****? So there’s a distinct.

Jill

So maybe he would like working mates.

Quinny

There’s a distinct possibility you will watch this and love the **** out of it, but Craven was ******* abortively terrible to the point where there was, actually. A. A scene a shot later in the film that wasn’t actually footage. It was a still image that they used AI to animate the ******* mouth on.

Jill

Yes, I heard about it. I heard about this.

Quinny

Yeah, they literally use AI to animate a mouse. It is.

Dion

Here.

Jill

I only want to watch Craven out of morbid. Curiosity, to be honest.

Quinny

There is. There is a. There is a scene in Craven where somebody gets told that something’s gone wrong and they make the weirdest noise.

Jill

All the weird kind of like. Calm noise.

Quinny

Yeah, it’s just like. What the **** were you people doing? When making this.

Dion

Film, but at least a TJ A TJ got his shirt off and has a RIP 6 pack in this. You know Jason just wears car hat which makes him at work in me.

Jill

Choices. A lot of Plaid, lot of.

Quinny

Denim. Yeah. Unfortunately we can’t give you an accurate answer because they haven’t been crave and I haven’t seen it working so.

Dion

Yep, Yep. Yeah, yeah.

Quinny

Sorry.

Dion

Speaking of big, tough working men punching the **** out.

Quinny

Right. So.

Dion

Of each other. What are we reviewing next week?

Jill

Oh, I’ve forgotten. What are we doing next week?

Dion

We’re going to be doing spandex people punching the **** out of each other, which is invincible Season 3, which is actually.

Jill

I gave up on it, yeah.

Dion

Quite good actually. I watched season 3. It’s quite good Reacher season 3 which.

Quinny

Sure.

Dion

Is. Yeah, yes. That’s that’s a shirtless hunt that you can. Get on board and severance, we finally get around to reviewing the last season of severance.

Quinny

I’m very excited for that one because I’ve got opinions about that, but I I mean.

Speaker

So.

Dion

Great. Can’t wait to hear your invincible opinions. And then my my opinion, maybe might I less than invincible? I be waiting for a while on that.

Quinny

I’ll just, I’ll try and watch some.

Dion

Yes, yes, Dino in in the in the he’s a working class man. Yeah, we’ve been playing it, but it’s not in the. ******* soundtrack. Because they’re lazy. As ****, and they wouldn’t know. Cuz they’re Americans criminal. And and all they know about is Russian mobsters and biker bars. Apparently, right. Yeah. OK. Thanks for joining along. Sorry on this on this rapid show, feels weird because we did the show on Friday. Yeah. Now the show is back on Tuesday. I’m like. Wait, didn’t we just do one of these things?

Quinny

Then we just do. This like, not that long ago.

Jill

Ohh we forgot it was Tuesday when. I was coming home podcast.

Dion

Yeah. And yeah, yeah, we’re we’re back next Tuesday and then we’re not here for the Easter the the, the, the, the, the Gooch between Easter weekend and Anzac Day weekend not here for that.

Jill

Yes, having a little break.

Dion

And then we’ve got another TV round up after that at the end of the month. And that’s daredevil yellow jackets and and doors. So there you go. There’s your list of shows to get up and running to your cells and.

Jill

Quinny

Coming up very shortly, we do have a bunch of new stuff hitting though. Last big pardon. Sorry, Last of Us new season. Kicked off or we’ll be kicking off very, very shortly on April 13th. But they had the big press screeny thing here in Sydney, which looked great. Umm.

Dion

Chris.

Jill

Yeah, look, hacks, hacks season 4.

Quinny

Which one?

Jill

11th hacks hacks.

Quinny

Al hacks, so he said packs. And I was like what we got and door coming out end of April. Doctor Who starting on April 12th.

Dion

That’s good. Look, the accountant 2’s coming out, Thunderbolt is coming out until dawn is coming out. Sinners is coming out.

Quinny

I actually want to push something that I’ve I’ve run across that I think is actually quite cool. It’s very much in my wheelhouse, so not going to be everybody’s taste. There’s a new series that is kicking off on Netflix called Wolf King. It’s uh animated show that is probably aimed at. Upper teen market similar sort of age to where arcane was at, I guess, right?

Jill

Dion

Is it anime?

Quinny

No, it’s not anime, it is CGI. Automated based on a series of books called where World. So it’s like a sort of Game of Thrones kind of thing, but all of the fiefdoms and lordships and stuff like that are where Lords. So where wolves, where, where lions, where bears. Yeah. Yeah, I kind of flicked it on. And I was like, oh, this could be a bit.

Jill

Oh.

Quinny

Sort of kid friendly and stuff like that and. I was like ohh. Just got some kind of cool **** going on.

Dion

Or are there any? Are there any? Isn’t it?

Quinny

There’s a guy he just stole **** inside him.

Speaker

Every.

Dion

Becomes a logistics center.

Jill

Is it going to appeal to those ***** little furries? You didn’t want to watch this show?

Quinny

Ohh 100% so much work like the lead guy is the the We’re wolf and he is just begging to be turned into some kind of weird ******* furry kink. Wow.

Jill

Quinny

Yeah, but yeah, good fun and quite entertaining. So on Netflix right now.

Dion

Let’s see you what I just mentioned anime. We’re taking suggestions for anime. Yeah, all of May. We’ll be doing anime shows, so let me know or let us know if there’s any anime we should be looking at because I’m going to default to Akira.

Quinny

It’s gonna be.

Jill

Yeah. Yeah, wants to find the uncut version of Ninja Scroll. If anybody knows what you.

Speaker 9

Come on.

Quinny

Ohh ****.

Dion

Had it on VHS and then they did me The Dirty when they released on DVD and I’ve never been able. To see it again. Ohh really. No, no, I don’t know.

Quinny

Oh.

Jill

Yeah, the DVD was the censored version.

Dion

The cat.

Speaker

Which is kind of sick.

Quinny

Because I remember the the the uncensored version quite well.

Speaker

Right.

Jill

Yes.

Quinny

Dion was also nice enough to remind me and put me in the way of finding a a documentary that’s on YouTube about an anime that we both watched back in the 90s called you’re at Sookie Doji, the Legend of the Overfiend, or.

Speaker

Ohh.

Quinny

Yes.

Dion

Yeah, I’m happy not to watch that one again. You know, that one’s got a lot of problems, but there was somebody did a deep dive on it and it was just like, oh, that’s interesting. But also wow, the the production of it is more fascinating than the actual content. Like, how did this get made? And even people like who did anime in Japan were like, we don’t know how this got.

Speaker

Yeah. Hmm.

Quinny

Anything like this **** was somebody just putting all of their kinks onto the screen and nobody stopped them.

Dion

Yep.

Quinny

Yeah, I know that I have found one that I’m going to be definitely pushing forwards which came out recently called Batman Ninja Versus Yakuza League.

Dion

Can I also?

Jill

That sounds ******* dumb.

Dion

Although that that one, that one scene that Quinny showed me today was actually quite funny, but I also want to put a caveat in there. It’s like nothing with more than like three seasons will have. Don’t have that expectation of anything more than three seasons. Like we can’t fit. I can’t fit that **** in. I mean, I can’t do a Smallville, so I’m gonna be like you should watch this anime and it. Has 953 episodes.

Jill

Ohh yeah, we’re not doing one piece.

Dion

No.

Speaker

Right.

Dion

Not doing that. You know.

Speaker

Well.

Dion

Yes.

Quinny

There you go. There you go.

Dion

Sure, I’ll. I’ll watch the the pilots.

Quinny

Yeah.

Jill

The first one and then the most recent one, yeah.

Dion

Piece. The last. Chuck.

Quinny

That whiplash is gonna be huge.

Dion

Yeah, that’s alright. Yeah, yeah.

Quinny

Well, thank you so much for joining us and thank you for those of you who did come along to the Friday show as well. Our yeah episode. Yeah. It’s been a lot of fun. Been great.

Dion

Yeah, try not to pay too much attention to the villager in a Minecraft movie. Even if they do have * **** nose and make weird sounds. That is that deeply uncomfortable. And I.

Speaker 2

Oh.

Dion

Don’t like it?

Quinny

Yeah. Ohh did you know that we we walked out too early? There is a post credit scene.

Jill

Ohh no.

Quinny

There’s a mid credit scene that we we found out. Yeah, but there is a post credit scene.

Jill

Saw that.

Dion

As well, with the voice you may recognize.

Speaker

****.

Quinny

Well, no, no, that’s that’s, that’s the midpoint.

Jill

That was the mid credit one.

Dion

Yeah, that’s only the the the.

Jill

Quinny

But yeah, there is. There is apparently something that Minecraft people will be like, Oh my God. And the rest of us will go. What? Ohh. Cool. Yeah. So I was. I I read about it and I was like, I’m glad I didn’t sit down any longer.

Speaker

Oh.

Dion

I’m. Alright, thanks everyone. We’re going to, we’re going to head on out.

Quinny

Yeah, just see if there’s anyone to raid. Message us. We’ll we’ll see you. Barjo, he’s currently playing the Last of Us Part 2, so let’s drop. You’re right in the.

Jill

Oh.

Quinny

Middle that’s some great heavy ****.

Dion

Excellent. We’ll see you all next Tuesday and I’ll change it to make sure it says not daylight saving time back to regular time now.

Quinny

Yeah. Damn it. Yeah, we’ll try and make sure. Alright. OK bye.
