If you’d asked me a few years ago what really drives team performance, I probably would’ve said strategy, clear goals, maybe even the right hire. But after working closely with hundreds of leaders, one thing has become unmistakably clear: the most powerful driver of team success is psychological safety.

It’s not the bonuses or the perks. It’s not even confidence or competence. It’s whether your team feels safe enough to speak up, take risks, own their mistakes, and be real with each other. Without fear. Without shame.

I just ran a workshop on this and honestly, it’s becoming one of my favourite things to teach. Because this isn’t just theory - it’s brain science. A safe brain is a high-performing brain. When your team feels psychologically safe, you unlock their full potential. When they don’t, performance drops, mistakes go up, and innovation slows to a halt.

In this episode, I’ll walk you through what psychological safety actually is, why it matters more than you think, five signs your team has it (and five signs it doesn’t), and how to start measuring it in your own workplace.
